HELLO Fellow Medhopefuls or Medconquerers :

Me = Canadian student accepted to University College Dublin 4 year program.

Q = can students do clinical rotations during the last 2 years in N.America, more specifically, Canada? Or is it all done in Dublin, UCD's affliated hospitals?

Budget wise, it'd be a whole lot cheaper for me, as a canadian student, to return to Toronto and to clinical rotations here while living at home to cut down $$$$$$$.

QUICK HELP!

Need answer asap, talking to bank loan specialist, trying to figure out $$$ issues so I can get back to UCD.

You can do some electives back in Canada. However, all cores must be done at Vincent's, The Mater, or the other UCD affiliate hospitals.

Irish schools aren't like the Caribbean, you're there for the long haul. This means you'll have to budget 4 years rent and living expenses in Dublin plus airfare back and forth b/w NA and Ireland when doing electives/interviews etc.

Hope that helps.

Electives are critical to do back in NAmerica (for experience, networking etc) but only count towards the one "required elective" in the summer before your final med year. Many do more but only one elective is required. Nothing counts specifically toward a clinical discipline or can substitute for your core rotations. It's all just extra for your own edification.

Some have tried in the past to schedule extra electives during the regular academic year in Ireland and haven't succeeded officially-- so some have snuck away for a month and hoped they didn't get caught. If you maximize your options, though, you can easily do two or three months worth of electives over the last two summers (I'm doing an official elective right now in the summer before fourth med). That adds up and can really help overall but of course it won't save you any money.
