MD co ‘20 Residency Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you really think it will make a difference? I feel like there might be certain circumstances where it could. But I honestly don’t think most programs will alter their rank list considerably because of an email from the applicant.

Yeah idk the answer to that. It probably varies from PD to PD.

Other advice (from a PD) i was given was to reach out to my top 3 or so programs to show my continued interest and to further touch on why the program is a fit for me.

What’s the harm? Like it’s not like it will hurt. May as well just type a letter and hope for the best
I just think both programs and applicants should just forget about post interview communication. No thank you’s, no “I like you” from the program, no "please love me" from the applicant. That’s the kind of world I wanna live in. But I don’t disagree with you at all.

People are people. The reality is that most people would rather be WANTED by a really good program than for a great program to just fall down to them. In an ideal world we wouldn’t have to do this because you’d know if you had the job a few weeks out from interview

This thank you and I love you routine is so forceful and fake.

If I ever become PD, I will straight up tell applicants not to contact me with any thank you or I love you email unless the email is a LOI telling me that my program is #1 on their list with a warning that sending out multiple #1s will result in a DNR.

Even then, that #1 email should only move an applicant up to the top of their tier rather than to the top of the rank list.

Join the revolution. I have sent no post-interview communication, or thank you letters.

I’ll do the same as a PD.

This. Admittedly, I did contact my number #1 program, as per the advice of residents and my school. It didn't take so much time and it wasn't "fake" so it sat "okay" with me. I have spoken to PDs in other fields who have stated they noticed a huge uptick of post-interview communication this year. They shared with me that at least in their program, it does not affect their ranking decision.

I haven’t sent a single bs thank you or I love you email except my LOI to my #1 today. The reasons and feelings were conveyed during my interview. Even then, it was a quick 6-8 sentences email with no expectation for a reply to me except to let them know my true intention. Ball is in their court.

Any verification or positive consequences for such garbage is a statement of encouragement from PDs to clutter their emails with trash.

That's fine, but there's no way you would know they sent out multiple #1's, and if they match elsewhere but could have matched with you (i.e. "they lied") then there's nothing you can do about it.

Medical students are generally gutless. If you tell them the possibility of being DNR for lying, you're literally mind screwing them about the possibility of DNR from multiple programs. That will scare them away.

My school just held a rank list meeting tonight for the M4 class and I thought I'd pass some important info along so you all are aware:

On March 13 everyone will get an email saying that they are eligible to SOAP. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU DID NOT RANK SO DON'T FREAK OUT. The "real" SOAP email will come out March 16 for those who actually have to SOAP.

Yeah my school had this conversation with us last week lol

My school didn’t tell us any of that I would have been crying. Thank you for the information kind stranger.

Really don’t know why they do it. Should just tell people that their rank lists was submitted. Like why mention SOAP at all?
They get joy out of knowing they spike the heart rates of every 4th year in existence.

They do it because it's possible that your status may have changed. An IMG who was ineligible for the match due to lack of step scores might now be eligible for SOAP. A US grad who was eligible for the match might now no longer be eligible because of problems at school. Etc.

All that said, I'd only send an email to the people who changed status, rather than everyone -- that would make much more sense.

Panic mode engaged. Looking at my rank list is just... the worst thing ever. Not because the options are bad or anything, just stressful asf trying to pick a place which will not only shape the rest of my career but may also be a hellhole and I wouldn't even know after a tour and brief interview.

Yeah this worries me too.

I’m upset because I’m leaning towards ranking location over prestige. It’s not like I have anyone else to consider but myself, so I feel like I would be “selling out” by ranking in such a way
Which I completely respect. Ultimately you want to he happy with where you're at. If you're gonna be miserable at a "prestigious" program it's not gonna matter how high that doximity ranking is.

True. It’s just that even the place I want is a good distance away from a major city. Everyone there was super nice and the training seemed decent. It’s just that it’s on the lower end of Doximity, while the other ones are near the top, but I wouldn’t want to live there for 4-5 years.

I don't know if this is a good way of looking at things or not but I've been treating Doximity rankings as more of a litmus test as opposed to true rankings. Top 10 y/n, top 50 y/n. And then anything out of that I am choosing to view as somewhat equivalent. Is there really all that much difference between #64, #72, #88, and #120? Beyond #100 does it really matter?

Wow. By Domixity’s standards i interviewed at a top 10 FM program.

You guys I wish past me was smart enough to put chill rotations at the end of the year. It’s getting hard to be “enthusiastic”.

My attending asked me a few days ago if i wanted to go home. I literally said “i always want to go home”.

This elective has been interesting so far at least. It is relatively chill, except im there from like 8-4

I'm on a sports med rotation right now where the hours are meh but my documentation burden is low and I get to watch sports for free.

I thought I had a chill 8-4 as well. Until I got bashed on my eval lol. Kinda blindsided me.

I hadn’t even looked before. My top is in the 50-100 range. Woooooooooo

Walked into the OR, first thing, surgeon asks me: "Are you going into surgery or are you here to fulfill a requirement?" Without even flinching, I replied: "My school requires me to do a surgery rotation during my 4th year".

What I wanted to say: "I'm just here so I don't get fined"

That sucks! I had 10 weeks of surgery as an M3 and that was soul sucking.

It’s amusing how much less I care about anything now. I’m already set on a specialty and just doing stuff now because i have to

I cannot imagine having to do surgery as an M4. 8 weeks as an M3 (plus two weeks of gyn) was more than enough.

Still working on my rank list. I am struggling with how important the ranking on Doximity is. My #1 program (I feel the most fit and really comfortable with the residents) is only like around the middle rank of all programs. The Top 10 program currently only ranks #5 on my list. I just didn’t get a great vibe with the residents although they are all nice. I know the training will be incredible and I can go far with the Top 10 program, I am just drawn to my #1 program. Am I leaving opportunities on the table by not ranking the Top 10 higher?

I have a Sub-I surgery coming up. Outpatient surgery 9-5 with no calls and weekends to myself.

Ain’t nobody have time for that trauma surgery crap.

I don’t know where you’re from, but location and fit are definitely top of the list for me. I think you should go with your gut.

Yeah this worries me too.

It'll work out, don't worry about it. Residency sucks everywhere

Location is literally the biggest reason applicants select for choosing/ranking a program in the graduate survey. You are by far not the only one doing this. Don't worry about ranking/prestige.

Yeah, I took a look at that list. Its BS, don't worry about it. I interviewed at 3 of the "top 10" FM programs there. The highest one ended up giving me a terrible feeling with interns talking about "constantly" breaking duty hours and being miserable. Another was filled with only old white guys (talking 60s-70s) on staff and again all the residents looking miserable and generally not being personable. Only 1 of those 3 programs actually seemed like an excellent program and it was in your neck of the woods.

Doximity ratings are based on residents and alumni talking about their own programs. Its basically a popularity test with the people with the most graduates taking the survey ending up at the top. Residency is rough. Ranking for prestige isn't going to make you feel better on those 80 hr weeks. Pick a place is a good location with the best fit.

What do you mean by leaving opportunities on the table? Opportunities now or job opportunities later? For opportunities now, if you don’t think the top ten was the best fit, then no, you aren’t leaving anything on the table. For example, who cares if a program has all the research in the world if doing research is the bane of your existence, it’s an opportunity you wouldn’t be taking advantage of anyway. For job opportunities later, you need to be looking at your long term goals. If your career goals include academic medicine at a brand name institution then yeah, that top ten program will probably open doors for you. If your career goals are anything else (private practice, academic med elsewhere, etc) then going to the place with the best fit is not going to hurt you. And honestly many of those jobs are going to be based on your fit with the practice. If your current number 1 is in a location that you want to someday practice in with people you liked a lot, that is potentially of far greater value than an institution name on your CV because you will be networking and building connections for your future during residency.

My #1 choice right now is in an excellent location 50 min away from my home, and is prestigious. The only problem is that the other residents are from top schools and seem to be high achievers, I'm the opposite, more laid back, and well kind of lazy. I know Im not the best fit for this program, but the location and program is too good. Is this a mistake?
