MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Oof was grilled a bit today about my research, but the interviewer wasn't really interested in the content, just the fact that I was listed in the middle of a bunch of authors - she stated that it looks like I was just given "favor publications"...even though I worked on them long term and am able to really speak about the work and it's a major part of my application. She kind of persisted on it and it got a little uncomfortable.

Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth during what was otherwise a great day.
Westchester?

Can we please not have these “hang out in the main zoom room and ask questions, you’re allowed to leave but not really because no one else is” sessions? Same questions are answered in cycles as applicants come in and out of interviews. Had a session where my total interview time was an hour but the entire day lasted about 5 hours.

I had this format before. I felt bad asking question because idk if it has been asked...and I felt bad for residents because they probably answered same questions over and over again...(especially those who hate their programs yet still have to say how much they love it)....the worst one is when I had this format, the residents just talked to each other...only to us when someone interrupted them...some of us hung around awkwardly tried to engage and show interest...🤦‍♀️

"We are like family... tight-knit... supportive atmosphere... unique curriculum..."
“It’s a big city with a small town feel”,

“parks”,

“we love the only 3 unique restaurants you saw when you googled dining in our city.”

“Breweries”

+/- “Super low cost-of-living”

I had a similar 5+ hour torture session yesterday...for a prelim!

HEY! I genuinely do like the parks here. But maybe that’s enhanced because good parks aren’t really a thing where I’m from. You won’t catch me saying anything else quoted here though, I drink wine during these things.

Yes I’ve heard all of those repeatedly plus:

“Trails”
“Hiking”
“Small town with the amenities of a bigger city”

I do think these zoom interviews have made everyone lazy. I wonder if a lot of programs and applicants end up at places that are not good fits this year?

I feel bad for applicants and programs this year. It’s rough.

Brah I turn my screen off so fast now during these once I'm done with my questions. There are always students that have anxiety about leaving but yeah, Aint nobody got time for that at this point.

I watched an episode of the office the other day while waiting for my final interview instead of asking about the call schedule for the 10th time.

Same. I turn my video/sound off and go get food the moment I have those breaks lol

Incoming controversial post:

I don't know about "lazy" per se but a bit more entitlement from some people is the vibe I'm getting. One girl was complaining about a program that asked her "why medicine" for an internal medicine residency interview on reddit saying it was an unfair question because that's what medical school interviews were for and some other user was talking about a place that gave them a pen without the hospital insignia and how that was a "bad look". I mean be grateful they're mailing you something after the interview. I remember interviewing at a community program in person and them straight up asking me to cut the BS and give them a straight answer (clearly some sort of thing to psych me out).
I don't think people are getting lazier. I think people are getting burned out faster. This year has a lot more stress than years past and I don't blame you all one bit for being checked out earlier than I was last year. It's been rough and I commend all of you for going through this shytestorm with your poise in check.

I do worry for the class of 2021 that there will be many more of you at places that aren't good fits because you haven't been able to visit in person. Know that there are many of us interns and upper level residents who completely sympathize with you (and are glad we are not in your position).

As for the entitlement: it was always there, since the dawn of time. Entitled jerkoffs will always be entitled jerkoffs, regardless of the interview platform.

Are meet and greets the night before really mandatory. Mine in the email I got said it’s optional. What are your guys thoughts on these? This might have been asked before but this thread blew up on page count post DO vs MD argument.

I consider them quasi mandatory. I think it will probably be noticed if you aren’t there, unless you email the PC earlier and tell them you have some unavoidable thing making it so you can’t be there.

Just to revisit the whole Zoom interview thing, I still think it will have little influence on how I’m going to rank programs.
Same. At one program, I can live in a legit house (like, yard and everything). At another, I'd be struggling to find a rundown 1bedroom I could afford anywhere nearby. Some places are closer to family vs far. Some are frozen solid half the year vs mild weather.

Even in a normal year I don't understand why people would care more about interview day than all these other factors, unless you get some kind of huge red flag from the current residents.

i try to be honest when answering questions... like, what do you like most about the area my program is in? I say it’s my home and ive been here a long time. In my free time i like to netflix. Sorry not sorry lol

I was browsing Reddit and happened to see some posts about this. People were saying they didn’t go because they were optional and then got grilled about it, and some residents were saying they are basically mandatory most places. But that’s Reddit so who knows.

I do try to attend all, but I've had to skip one due to prior obligations. If they say they are optional then I take that information at face value. If "optional" is some kind of BS test of interest/commitment, eff em.

I think it’s really program dependent. I will point out reddit also seemed to believe we should be following programs on Twitter to get invites lol.

Well residents are overworked lol the nature of the beast
Heheh depend on the programs lol..but at least most I say try to look happy and dress decently...some look obviously disinterest or show up look like a hot mess

this is not a controversial post at all. I saw that same comment and was irked by it. I'm shocked some IM applicants don't understand that the term "medicine" refers to IM. So "why medicine?" is not "why medical school?", rather, "why internal medicine?".

I have more golden weekends than i dont and still managed to sleep 14 hours last night.

I did an interview day in scrubs and fixed my hair once i realized how bad it looked on camera. Oops

I don't usually care how people look...but this one resident showed up looking like an alcoholic going through DT...not sure who would want to match there

Eek, yeah no good

Yeah pretty sure they mean "why IM."

I was actually asked "why medicine" and I'm applying surgery. I was like "Bruh I have no choice I'm a 4th year student"

I can't have social media due to a situation so this made me super anxious. Thankfully doesnt appear to have really affected me but I have been to interviews where someone says to an applicant we remember you from twitter lol :dead:
I will DNR any program who brings up twitter in an interview day lmao. If a place ranks someone because of their social media stuff I would def not fit that culture.

Also it probably means they love the virtue signaling pandering medtwitter influencers.

Anyone interviewed at top programs and realized it is not a fit? What a shame 😭
Lol. Way to humble brag (or not so humble brag). But yes, interviewed with what is supposedly the #1 program in my field (though I wouldn't put too much weight on those rankings honestly) and I was totally checked out. I missed one session and a social hour unintentionally because my brain was mush at that point (also they sent multiple documents with zoom links for different sessions - why?). One interview with a fellow who seemed miserable (I kept trying to make jokes to lighten the mood, but humor could not get through to this guy). Had one really nice interview towards the end (of a total of like 8 interviews over 2 days 😵) but as much as I liked the guy he was basically like, "OK so you're from there? Where's your partner from? Oh yeah, so ok, you're probably not coming here). Weird to hear someone say that as opposed to trying to recruit you, but it did ring true.

Nah it is m out of my league for me...it is already a miracle that I got the interview...but the whole interview made me feel like a dummie...sorry you had bad experience too. Interviews suck
