As someone who interviewed in the double digits last year and was a 'top' applicant (260s step 1 and 2, honors in all clinicals except HP in peds) with excellent LORs...it's not selfish to maximize your chances. Even with good stats, you can always SOAP. I did.

You must have had some red flags though. Or bombed the interviews?! What did you apply to?
They absolutely do this.
She can answer for herself (she has posted about it before) but when I hear these anecdotes I feel sorry for the person, primarily. Then I wonder just how top heavy the list was?
Just by chance, sometimes you can become the outlier. Now excuse me while i go scream into my pillow.

I wasnt even a top applicant but applied to 46 FM programs, attended 16 interviews and fell pretty far down my list. Absolutely possible!!! Unfortunate casualty of a strange system but it shouldn't mean that everyone acts crazy because of it.
Nope. Seriously I did not. I applied to general surgery. When I SOAPed, I was approached by a PD that I had interviewed with and offered prelim slots there along with apologies for "not ranking you high enough".
The program director at my current residency reviewed my app with me multiple times and essentially told me not to change anything, it was already in top shape.
Not that top heavy. My interviews were more top heavy than my list, but I couldn't control that. I applied to 60 programs, including many community programs. Offered 16 interview invites, including 5-6 community programs. Granted, I did prioritize academic places for the 3 interviews I was forced to miss (only went on 13), so I ranked only 4 community programs, but still...not all of my academic programs were 'top-heavy' either. I had some solid mid-tier places that just didn't work out.
I'm not trying to be doomsday - my case was bad luck combined with some stupid ego-driven yield protection combined with probably me not selling my interest to some of the 'lower tier' programs. And it worked out alright - I ended up at one of the best programs in the country for my prelim. And on the other end of the spectrum, my friend had only 3 interviews, a LOR with a red flag in it (questioned their punctuality), and decent scores/grades...matched their top choice in the country, an amazing program. Even in the 'logical' Match, a few people roll 2s or 12s at the end of the day.
I'm just saying that while it's easy to begrudge those who have 'sure thing' applications and hold on to many interviews, it's not unreasonable for them to be running scared, too. This process is bananas, and it hits everyone hard. Nobody wants to be the 2% who fall through the cracks, and trust me it hurts even more to be that when there is ANYthing you could have done to improve your odds of a good match, or any match at all. Take every interview you get and don't let people call you greedy for it.
And for the love of god, PDs, stop worrying about how far down your rank list you dip. It undermines the system.

I remember reading about this when you originally shared it. It didn't make sense then or now. Still, the making decisions based on extreme outliers isn't good for anyone.
So much this. It's hard to imagine applicants or programs not just ranking in order of preference and letting the algorithm work. Every year it happens. It sounds like things worked out, but it sucks that you had to go through that.
Finally a couple! I'm praying for us all to get through this mess.

I had a research rotation that fell through so I have to use my vacation now. I LITERALLY have nothing else to do besides sit here and refresh my email haha its cold and rainy outside to top it all off. Its gonna be a long cycle

It's an empathy test. Definitely the most frustrating exam I have ever taken.
Its a bull**** non-science based, non standardized nonsensical hoop to jump through that only serves to increase the cost to applicants.
I bet there are plenty of psychopaths and people with poor insight that pass through it without problem.
WTF do these programs think confidential LORS are for?
Luckily since this is the pilot year for it I did not pay for it. But I agree with the above statements - it just seems frustratingly useless

I havent even gotten the application recieved email that many people are getting. But all materials have been assigned so not sure if they just dont do that.

What are people’s thoughts on scheduling an AM interview and a PM interview on the same day at different institutions? Theoretically should be fine, right?

Theoretically, there wouldn't be a conflict but practically speaking I personally would be too exhausted to perform well on the second, and too nervous for the second to perform well on the first

I have 9 IM IV's so far... Is it wise to keep accepting all of them? Most of them haven't been at places I'm crazy about. I'm scared I'll get burnt out before I get IV's from places I want to go.

I meant travel to interviews but that is cancelled now. The most traveling I will be doing for interview season now is from my bed to couch lmao.
Maybe schedule some weak ones later so you can politely cancel as well as help another IM applicant out at the same time.
Ok I will start doing that! I already scheduled all of those interviews to be conducted within the next 2-3 weeks but from now on I will try to follow that. I was just scared initially because i thought they would be good for practice

I suspect they have no idea how to try and figure out who is actually interested. Secondaries just waste all of our time and don’t actually help them know that either... but they seem hellbent on trying lol
