MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

I’m wondering where all these extra premeds came from in the first place. Is there just a stockpile of premeds somewhere just waiting for COVID to hit so they can apply at once?
100k people take the mcat every year, only 50~k people apply to medical school. Now if you go back three years that means there are in excess of 150k people that took the mcat and did not get into medical school.
Im sure these people would like to try again, usually people move on , find other employment. But if you get laid off and have had a dream about becoming a physician. Now is your chance to study and take the mcat or atleast apply.

Where do you have the mic positioned? Directly in front of you? Off to the side? Is it in view through the webcam?
As close as I can get it without it in view of the camera. I would also recommend cardioid mode (just make sure you have the correct side facing you).

The one issue is that, if I'm reading it right, it seems to be comparing # of apps for 10/21 across each year, when what we need for a fair comparison is # of apps on opening day across each year.

Does anyone believe the AAMC data? Might be confirmation bias, but feels like everyone I've talked to in real life has been applying to more programs as well and then there's all the wild 200% increase that ppl are throwing around.

opening day was earlier for other years, sure. But it is still a good measure considering the standard recc is to apply the first day to all the programs you want to.

My other issue with the data is the numbers don’t tally up with the NRMP report. 1300 USMD anesthesia applicants in the NRMP but 1700 in the AAMC data? Is that cause people don’t get interviews/dropout/don’t rank? If so that’s a lot of people

Any other big discrepancies? Anesthesia is weird bc it’s a backup for super competitive people and the reach for a lot of noncompetitive people in my experience.

people dual apply and match something else. like there were 300~USMD applying NSX, it only has 230 spots, and the charting outcomes usually only shows 245~ applying.

No the main NRMP match results shows 1300 anesthesiology USMD applicants. Which is weird.

perfectly in line with people using it as a backup or less competitive people dual applying.

Should I start sending out LOIs for IM? I'm a DO student and some of my friends have already started hearing back...

I haven't gotten any rejections yet. Just mainly the generic "We received your app" email.

Too early IMO; wait through the end of next week. I think things will pick up a lot more for everyone next week when programs have had more time to review apps.

This. I think this week was more people with crazy high stats, people with direct connections to programs/audition rotation ones, and home programs from what I've seen.

I mean that list illustrates my point. It shows 2000 total applicants for anesthesia and the AAMC list has 2800+ total applicants for anesthesia. So where’s this massive difference coming from

I don’t think it is that weird. Remember, the AAMC ERAS data report different thing than NRMP data. It has been explained before here (by one of the attendings or program directors, can’t remember exactly). AAMC ERAS data reports the number of applicants. NRMP reports the number of applicants who submit at least one rank. So, AAMC ERAS data will always be larger than NRMP data because (1) not everyone who applies gets interview, and if no interview, no rank, and (2) as @libertyyne mentioned, for those dual applying anesthesiology, if they are strong applicants and do ok with their primary specialty, they might not end up submitting rank list for anesthesiology (since it is their back up). I think the data makes sense

PD at my program says theyre getting annoyed by applicants who are constantly emailing about their app or interviews, someone sent a LOI a half hour after submission. Another applicant has sent daily emails about his status. He wont be getting an interview. I cant wait to hear the other stories from this cycle.

Sounds about right. It’s painful to see people’s obsessive neuroticism actually decrease their chances of obtaining their program of choice

Lesson learned. Will wait 3-4 weeks before bothering PDs.

Or is he actually a gunner using reverse psychology to stop others from sending LOIs cause he knows there’s an advantage to doing so?
Nooooooo it’s absurd I hope you’re being sarcastic. I’m more posting for people who might actually believe this haha they have like 500-800 applications to go through, minimum, and some generic email 50 hours after the opening of applications isn’t gonna make them go dig through and find your app.

everybody chill for at least another week

Everyone needs to chill, I know someone with 270+ stats in IM with 1 interview. Before you ask, everything else on their app is top notch as well. OP human being. Just find some hobbies pls.
1. This is literally called the PANIC thread.
2. Telling someone to chill has never worked
3. I know someone with 220 with 10 IM interviews
4. I have hobbies

I mean it isn't wrong though...worrying and venting fine, I was more talking about blowing up PDs emails with generic LOI/emails like was mentioned above. Everyones panicking, but its literally been half a week and jumping off the deep end and doing something to hurt your chances is the exact opposite of what should be happening. Its gotta take time to sift through all the actual applications, which is why its kinda been looking like the next two weeks will be when things get moving.

All I meant was chill in terms of forcing interactions with programs at this point cuz it likely wont come off favorably this early on

Oh yeah I’m not doing that. But definitely commiserating here and with class friends.

Lol fair but.
1. I was hoping information like this would help you panic less
3. Depends on programs I guess. My point being a majority
4. Then do them to practice anxiolysis!

ERAS Statistics Found this and want to share it because after looking at the data, I was able to calm down a bit. Seeing the chat on Reddit and here, I freaked out when there were discussions about programs seeing a 200% increase in applications or the number of applicants double from last year. Based on the data from AAMC, there is nowhere close to this level of increase as reported in these chats. As a matter of fact, for FM and Psych, the average number of applications per program has gone down from last year.
Good find! Shockingly similar numbers to prior years.

Though, I'm not sure this is what should have been stressing us out to begin with. It's the distribution of interviews that I think will get funky, with the top applicants able to consume a lot more interview slots this year than previous cycles.

I feel like programs are already tyring to practice yield protection by trying to aim for applicants from the region moreso then previous cycles.

hm idk if this is true lol. i got an II for a region i am out of region for!!!
Most of the rads interviews on our boards have been regional. Maybe you fit the academic profile the program goes for ? Plus its not going to be every program , rather trends.

definitely on the lower end for this program so I don't think so. I think they just got to read my app. I think that next week more out of region interviews are going to come as people read! got no regional love though (boo!)

top applicants from my school still went on every interview they got though since nothing is guaranteed! i have more faith now!

Right now as an upper-mid tier applicant I’ve got 2 EM interviews, one local and one from a subI. I know in my Heartthat’s great for early EM but watching that spreadsheet makes me feel like there’s a hidden red flag. if I don’t get many this week I’ll just wait to see what red Flags They tell me about in my first interview then panic and send of LOIs.

Yeah, yield protection/regional bias is happening and it sucks. Not getting any supposed mid-tier interviews (programs I might actually prefer to go to). Didn’t think my Step score would screen me out of programs but there you go

Don't forget there's no way to verify the info in the spreadsheet. As ****ty as it would be, I wouldn't for 1 second be surprised if some gunner/troll was posting misleading information on the spreadsheet just to demoralize the perceived competition.

I know this horse gets beaten to death, and I'm a second year invading you guys' space, but really... is there a way to convince PDs that you truly don't have a regional preference? I've had permanent residence in four different states (all east coast, unfortunately) and don't really feel strong ties to any of them. I mean, I LOVED where I lived in south Florida but it was way too expensive to go back to as a resident. I don't want to half to choose between living in a trash heap and living off of ramen to make ends meet. I'd actually like to live cheaply enough that I can start making loan payments during residency.

In fact, it would be kinda great to go somewhere I've never been before. My only family in my hometown is my mom, and since my dad died during my med school app cycle, I'm an only child, and she's living in a boring townhouse she's already tired of, she's just talking about selling her townhouse and moving wherever I move anyway. So, as far as being close to my family during residency, my family is planning on moving with me so I'll be close no matter where in the country I go... is there a way to say that without being a weirdo? lmfao

Edit - third year. I'm so sleep deprived I can't even correctly say what year I'm in.

Not really the time. This is prime freak out time for us haha but honestly not really. If you’re applying all over the country it kinda shows that, and if a programs gets an app from far away they kinda figure that, or else why even apply?

There is a way to see the “history” of cells on sheets so you can see if someone just added “53” to the interview count instead of 53 people individually adding 1 at a time.

It's a probabilities thing. You might be willing to move to the midwest, but for every 1 of you, there are 99 people born and raised on the east coast who will only consider flyover country as a low-ranked safety option. I definitely wouldn't tell them that the plan is for your mom to sell her house and move out there with you. Then they def will think they're a safety.

under normal circumstances you would be able to complete away rotations in locations/ programs you are interested in. This would show your desire to move to those areas, coupled with LORs from regional players would help make your case better then you ever could.

I guess it's a quick way to get your app screened to the trash

Going forward can we please stop with the "GUYS, chill out, it's only been ____ days, they have to read your app still" comments? In the condensed season no one knows anything and it's entirely possible that some programs have assigned all their interviews at this point. Let us vent in peace.

Agreed. Let people stress out on here.

So far, my one interview had dates extending to late January. I think this year programs will be sending out interviews throughout the next three months. It'll be a long three months for sure.

It seems like a lot of programs are yield protecting pretty hard right now. A few places in my area have sent invites to people in my class with average apps while the others I know with excellent apps have been left dry from the same place.

What exactly does this term "yeild protection" mean? If you don't mind me asking. Is it just programs targeting applicants who they think are safety applicants for their program?
