MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Still sitting at zero, applied to 108 gen surge programs. Scores are 225/231 508/639... That 231 blows, so does the 508. I am half way through 7 auditions and so far only 1 has been like “dang, we like you.”

Seriously considering slapping together a last minute FM or maybe IM app. I wanted to be all in and do a surgical prelim if I don’t match, but I feel like if I am this Eff’d now then why bother wasting a year doing prelim when nobody wants me anyway? It sucks because I genuinely don’t want to do anything else, but what can I do? I need a job.

Very carefully?

I’m thinking I’m one of those guys who only hurts himself by doing auditions because inevitably I look like a ***** at these places. Definitely rethinking my place in the universe lately.

SDN editing out the word “more-on” is kind of funny.

Anybody get that UF Jax IM invite and get their thalamus link yet?

I just got my first invite!!! Thank you universe!!! Instate, applied for audition and didn’t get one.

haha never mind I’m reading now it was a glitch and the invite message went to everyone that applied. That 2 hours of hope was worse than never having it at all. That is so messed up. can I just have a medically induced coma until I get a real invite? Geez.

Don't think this is confirmed yet though.

Wow that really sucks i'm sorry. I hate glitches. With all the advances in technology, programs sending false invites over glitches is pretty hurtful.

Kind of a weird question, but it crossed my mind today as I was scheduling a mock interview- how are we supposed to react if we get an II in the middle of our zoom interview? Just keep a straight face and try not to look suspicious as we log into ERAS?
Oh for sure. Or don't even log into ERAS at all. It can't be THAT hard to tell if you aren't paying attention and literally scheduling another interview. In my mind, that comes across like pulling out your phone and checking your email during the interview. Interviews aren't too long just wait until in between or after

Maybe get your SO or a trusted family member/friend to watch over your email/ERAS account for the hour or so that you're actually interviewing?

What if the interview lasts the whole day (presentations etc.) Do I hire a pre-med to watch my ERAS all day or do you book stuff during the presentations?

The thought of you hiring a pre-med to watch your ERAS all day is hilarious so you should do that. They can put it on their med school application lol.

They sell portable second screens for under 100 bucks. Easy access to look stuff up to ask, all it takes it looking to the right or left for just a second or even can be set up so its right behind the computer so it looks like you're locked in. I already have a larger monitor but that's my plan

if hypothetically you really wanted an interview at a specific program, and you were to send a letter of interest. To whom would you send said letter? and how do you find this person's email address? and what would be considered appropriate to say in this letter? lol thank you. asking for a friend

Have a trusted friend or family member man your email/eras during that time? That’s what I did during Step 2 CS and interviews during invite season. My boyfriend had all my info and checked for me.

You would send it to their program coordinator and the email/contact info is often online on their contact us tab on their website. Someone mentioned a good way to craft a LOI in the above comments/pages I can't remember which page though.

much thanks!!

How much should we “practice” for interviews? Besides making sure your set up is good and researching the program obvi. Should I be looking into commonly asked questions? I’m personable and have good social skills (I think?). People keep telling me to be myself but idk...

I have a word document where I started typing up loose answers to common questions. Used the ones from ACP (for IM) plus imagined what programs might ask me specifically. I won’t memorize them or read them, but I wanted to get my thoughts down.

Friend said he did receive an eras message from UFJacksonville saying it was an error.

I did not. Did you?

JUST got it a moment ago.

Due to a system error, an email for an invitation to schedule an interview went out inadvertently thru ERAS to all applicants on Oct 27 approx 2 pm EST. If you have received this particular email, please disregard it. As we continue to review applications, you may receive a further notification to schedule an interview.
We apologize for the confusion this has caused. Thank you for your patience.

That is like worst of the Worst.

I feel like Grandpa Joe wanting to yell at them.
“You’re a crook... you’re a cheat and a swindler. How could you do a thing like this!? Build up a little boy’s hopes just to smash it into pieces!”

and UF Jackson is like “I SAID GOOD DAY SIR!”

Does anyone applying to EM this year know if my friend only has 2 SLOEs, but no other letters, will programs look at his app or consider it incomplete? He’s scrambling to try to get another letter right now

Well I have one ESLOE (from an EM residency I auditioned at) and an OSLOE from a fam med rotation. I'm waiting for the surgeon I was with last month to finish up my other OSLOE.....so I sent in just the 2 to ERAS and have 2 invites so far. I have spoken to a few programs that say they're only requiring 2 LORs....one of which must be an ESLOE.

IM. Applied to 108 programs. All Florida programs, and then mostly SEC territory (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Carolinas, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri), and a couple in Nevada and Arizona.

DO student. 223 Step 1. I didn’t take Step 2 CK (yet?) and my Level 2 CE score isn’t released for 6-7 days. So possibly that? Even though program websites say you only need them for rank, if everyone else has theirs then I’m less complete than them.

I know them feels. I'm waiting on my CE scores to be released, too.

MD/PhD with step 1 224 and step 2 237 applied to 95 categorical IM programs and only have three interviews at backup schools. Feels real bad not having any of my top choices.

Do you have a good home program that you would be happy at? You got this.

Ya just found out my home program sent out invites yesterday and I was not one of them. Very disheartening to spend 8 years at a place and not get an invite.
You will probably get an invite at some point. Unless the pd and chair hate you. Home programs tend to give most applicants a sincere shot atleast

Hopefully, it just feels like only 3 interviews after applying to 95 with an MD/PhD is kind of super low.

My home program did this, I was the last home student to be invited 🙄. They only offered one interview slot at a time and I guess they didn't want us all on the same day. Your program might have a dumb reason like this.
