Hi is it wise to drink coffee to do late night studying? I tend to focus better during nighttime, (cos I'm into sports and I hate to be studying during daytime when the sun's out... 🙁

Strong black keeps you awake apparently, even though it may damage your liver and stuff..

Just depends on how much caffeine is in the coffee, so, how much coffee you put in it...

I think energy drinks are a little more effective, and you get more caffeine for less volume.

Do your kidneys a favor and alternate the coffee/energy drink with a glass of water, though. 🙂

I just read an article that demonstrated the protective effects of coffee on the liver - with a particularly strong protective effect from alcoholic cirrhosis.

I don't think coffee is so bad in moderation (as in everything, I guess). I read an article once on Pubmed maybe (?) about how a daily cup of coffee might reduce the risk for diabetes type 2 later on in life.

And peanuts cause gynecomastia while making vasa deferentia / fallopians tie themselves in a knot and sing "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" to each other at 3am.

It's coffee! 🙂

Oh, as to the question... in my highly unprofessional opinion, I'd say you know your response to significant caffeine intake - and consequent sleep/wake cycle effects - better than we do. You could do far worse than downing a couple at 'Bucks or your local brown water hole at 10-11pm or whatever, methinks.

I mean, everything in moderation and all (as I am assuming you have no desire to test Wikipedia's mention of caffeine's LD50 being at 150-200 mg/kg), but you knew that.

hmm pubmed? well if it was up there i will not dispute it. But seriously, if you want to maintain your cortisol levels in an undisturbed balance then you better stop coffee. I want to follow the normal diurnal cycle.

I've also read something about the number of illnesses/Psychoses that Harry Potter has. I found it on PubMed. Ironically it was published in a British Journal of Medicine of something of that nature. It talked something of his persistent head aches and a bunch of crap like that...How do you fund something like that???? It's ******ed!!

PS my point is you can find almost anything you want on pubmed. Look up potatoe skin bandages. It's a sad academic world out there.....

I drink a strong black tea...like with teabag sitting in the cup...around 7pm every night and still nod off around 10 pm without a problem. But I always have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo. Go figure. 😕

Must get bitter towards the end of the cup, no?

(I'm a huge tea *****. www.adagio.com may as well be my homepage.)

Err...damage your liver? How much are you drinking exactly?

Well, coffee does have a lot of random phytochemicals in it, but the caffeine tends to negate a lot of the protective effects, lol. Decaf is supposed to be good for you though (guess it's really just like tea if you drink it decaf though).

really? i didn't know that...decaf? it still has caf in the spelling - lol...thats a no no for me. But i guess you take it because of the random phytochemicals...i hope they have performed randomized control trials on your phytochemicals...before one of them randomly pushes your hepatocytes into necrosis....lol

I'm more concerned about the implication that you never sleep. Sleep deprivation will definitely impair your learning and memory.

I drank 3 cups of coffee today. It has helped keep me up for 24 hours for my ob/gyn night float. 3 more hours to go...

Not true, coffee has more caffeine per unit volume than "standard" energy drinks like rockstar and redbull (cocaine and 5 hour energy have more) energy drinks have other stuff, like taurine, which may or may not act as stimulants

Coffe IS a DRUG! First of all you feel nice, then you have to increase a dose but soon your heart will not sustain. COFFE is an ENEMY! BUT I CAN'T LEAVE WITHOUT IT!!!

Check out this website Death By Caffeine. It lets you know how much of your favorite caffeinated beverage it will take to "bump you off". It looks like they have pretty much covered most drinks on the site. Still, a nice fresh cup of "joe" in the morning is a nice thing. Late at night, it only good for heartburn.

Ooh, nice find. Did the numbers - with the rounding shown for caffeine / serving counts, that site's using LD ~= 150.45 mg/kg (~68.24 mg/lb for those wondering).

How I love my coffee/tea.
