College Math

Do/did any of you all struggle with math in undergrad? I have always had problems with math. In high school it was usually all I could do to pass. But, now that I have gotten into college(it takes a lot of work) I make B's in math. I do very well in Biology and science related classes, I think it is odd to be good at science but really really bad at math. What do you all think?

I think if you're talking about biology (or at least certain areas) vs. math, it makes sense that it's possible to great in one and not as well with the other. Biology tends to be more descriptive and conceptual, especially at the more introductory levels, and doesn't contain the same amount of quantitativeness as math.

Even doing well in physics (which in many ways is just applied math) is possible without being good at pure math because, at least for some people, seeing the application of the math to something more conceptual makes it go down a lot easier.

I'm one of those weirdos who loves math. I had an amazing high school math teacher though which I think helped a lot because when I took Calculus at college, I tested out of Calculus I via AP credit and I already knew almost everything covered in Calculus II already from high school which made it a lot easier. If biology wasn't t more condusive to my dream of being a vet and possible back up plans, I would of definately been a math major. I don't think doing well in sciences but being bad at math is that weird though because a lot of my biology classmates hated calculus.

Even though I'm doing well in physics, I've hated it since high school.

No, I've always done well in math.

Organic chem on the other hand..I didn't struggle with it in high school per se but I found it very confusing and it was definitely the hardest part of chemistry for me. In undergrad orgo, with an entire course dedicated to it, I definitely struggled. I'm pretty good at chem otherwise - orgo is my kryptonite.

Oh, I definitely hate physics also. Withdrew once in undergrad and putting off retaking it as long as possible. Really excited to be able to take a non-calc-based version this time through, though.

I actually really like some kinds of math--really loved the linear algebra I've had and enjoy more spatial, geometry-type aspects--but, even though I did perfectly fine in the class, could never get the hang of calculus. There are a lot of different types of math.

Just a note: There are a handful of students in my class who seem to freak whenever there is some math in a class. It is kind of pathetic to me. I hope they aren't figuring out any dosages for my pets. Vet school math has not exactly been hard core.

My point..... I am not sure you need worry too much about your math skills. You should be fine.

Vet school math doesn't really move beyond algebra-type stuff, like proportions/percentages/etc. (and maybe logarithms for pH things with biochem?), right? I mean, we're not talking like I'm ever going to have remember how to do calculus or something again?

as far as I know/recall that is correct.

I saw a cool chart in my schools tutoring center that listed a bunch of careers and said "When will you need all this math?" Under veterinary medicine, it checked off everything up to pre-calc. I don't know how accurate that is but I felt relieved.

AFAIK that's one of the few electives adcoms might frown on. Even if you get an A. ...Especially if you get an A.
