I have a quick question.
Do med schools see how many schools you have applied to? I know on the AMCAS it lists all the schools you applied to, but will medical schools see this too? If so, how many medical schools is too many? That is, when do medical schools start to think that you don't care where you go, and you just applied to as many as you could.

Yup! Schools do see how many you applied to, and average # of schools applied to last year was 12.3 or so. If you apply to around 10 schools I do not think that is too many. Even maybe 15, 20, 30 is ok.It shows them that you really want to get in and that you are ready to move across country to do it.On the other hand, if you apply to only few that might work against you on so many levels. Also, there is more than 50 schools you can apply to so that leaves a lot of space.Good luck !!! 😀

Interesting. Do schools also see *which* schools you've applied to?

No. The page that we see on the AMCAS app (the page that shows the list of schools applied to) is not visible on the schools' end. They don't know where else you've applied.

In addition, I thought they did not know how many schools you applied to either...the AAMC just gathers those "Avg schools applied to" stats on their own.

I might be misinformed but my advisor told me that schools can see how many schools we apply to.

I saw the AMCAS that a school had on me at an interview with the Dean of the school. He had taken my application and highlighted some things out of it, so I got to see it all as he flipped through it. It looks (on paper) the same as what you get if you make the version to print out - except the last section, the one listing the schools you've applied to, has only one name, and that's the school that accesses it. The schools (unless it's elsewhere) can't see which schools or how many other schools you've applied to.

Oh, and there are 126 allopathic US medical schools, which is well more than 50... just as an FYI.
