I heard the columbia review verbal practice (16 verbal exams) was pretty good, did anyone try it out?

Keep away from Columbia Review. Their books are filled with nearly as many errors as ARCO's. For verbal practice, I recommend EK 101 verbal passages or (if you can find them) AAMC verbal practice items.

Hope this helps.

Aug2004-
I posted on the bioethics site. I did not do well in verbal (August 2004) so I am thinking about a re-take this April 2005 and getting revenge. An MCAT savvy co-worker, that also had some trouble with verbal in August 2004, took a look at my Columbia Review book (16 Verbal exams) and we kind of agreed it is going to be allright practice. If you are going to use it, I would strongly urge you to use it now for it is a little out-dated. I am saving my Examkrackers 101 book for days filled with less rain. Post any other good piece of information about MCAT verbal as I am not going to study any science until 3-4 weeks before the next MCAT, just good ol' rigorous verbal training.

hofstrashmuck, cool, cool, cool. I may buy that Col. review book then. Since you asked, EK uses three diagnostic exams for their class. You should get a hold of those from their website because those exams are even better than the EK 101 books.

What is a hofstrashmuck anyway?

Haha, Hofstra is a school in LI, NY. I am here for the year just floating. The Schmuck part is because I just got slammed by MCAT verbal. Like a few others, my overall score is pretty strong, but verbal reasoning jeopardized my application 🙁. My verbal score has sent me into shock, but I think I am moving in the right direction. By the way, I have been reading your posts frequently because you put in words a lot of ideas that have floated through my mind. I have mentioned to others how the test-taking population is getting stronger, making tougher curves, which I have noticed you hint at in posts. Good luck

I did awful, 25 with 5 in verbal. I was a biochem major and did research. My cum. was 3.5. I have pulled all my applications from allopathic schools and am hoping for some D.O. luck from NYCOM/NYIT, PCOM, or Lake Erie. What are your numbers? hopefulls? etc.

I think you may have some luck with your applications. You must have done well on your science sections and should definitely celebrate by buying yourself an ice-cream cone, lol. I don't like the idea of sharing my numbers. My disappointment with my performance is relative to what I expected (sometimes you can be your own worst enemy). I will say I worked very hard as an undergraduate biochemistry major receiving distinctions, like you. My MCAT science scores reflect the time I spent working hard, especially physical sciences. I did not apply to Osteophathic Schools for no good reason. I did not expect to have this problem and was not prepared to deal with failure. I am going to apply for phD programs because I am interested in translational research. I will sit for the MCAT again and try to destroy verbal reasoning with wholehearted effort, hopefully providing some additional options. Good luck to you,
