Columbia Wait List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is becoming even more nerve-wracking now! Has anyone heard any more updates on the few withdrawals situation? Do you guys think that it is really true? It seems to me that we all got a different version of how many get accepted and how bleak it all looks as of April. Wannabedoc, how did it go?

Since I was checking out the thread for info. regarding the interview, I decided to post. I haven't interviewed yet, it is at 2:30 pm.

How did I get the famous second-interview? I don't know. I just got a letter asking me to call for an appointment. I called but the secretary said she didn't have anything for me until June! So, I kindly declined telling her that I had summer plans outside of the country. Next day, I got an email asking me to confirm my appointment time on May 16th. I'm ecstatic to finally meet "the man."

Okay, I'd better go iron my suit.

good luck wannabe!

let us know how it goes!

has everyone voted on the poll i posted yesterday? last time i checked 20 of us had voted.

Bump!!
Wannabe, how did it go?

wow...u're pretty hardcore about columbia. 😉

:clap::clap: :clap: :clap:
yay Columbia...

just remember the dental students in your classes have feelings!

You guys are psychotic on this thread. I really hope a lot of you get off the waitlist. Crazy people are my favorite kind of people to hang with. 🙂

Guys -

I got up the nerve to call the admissions office today and I talked to the secretary and she said - you will ahve to ask Dean Frantz those questions... And gave my call over. I was panicked as I had not thought this would happen. He said fewer withdrawls this year, less movement, maybe maybe. Asked if I was still interested, ect. Mentioned that I had stated that Columbia was my first choice inapril, so he must have had my file out or at least a spreadsheet with names on it. But no mention of a second interview, anything else, ect.

Oh well.

hey, did he mention that he'd written down columbia was ur first choice or u mentioned it to him?

He said to me - "you have noted that Columbia is your first choice in a letter you sent in April" so he brought it up to me.

lol. calm down. if i know the meaning of med school admissions, i wouldn't be posting anymore. 😀 let the waiting continue....

Does anyone on the Columbia wait list have any regrets about the letters of interest they've sent so far? Maybe feeling like you said too much or too little or sounded arrogant or desperate or something? Just curious because I've been feeling this way from time to time about a few of the letters I sent to different schools. No evidence to support the feelings except... well I'm not in yet. But that's not saying much this early on.

I don't know... I think I am probably the inside joke of the admissions office at columbia given I try to communicate so much. I wish I had interesting things to say, I do, but then I just choke when I think of Dean Frantz and the pressure to impress him. I am getting very worried that there has been no movement on this list. MAYBE this will be the one year where there won't be any movement on this list... And yes, I am very interested and perhaps a little crazy, good crazy though 😉

i wish you asked how many people stated columbia as their 1st choice... since he had that info out avaiable and all 🙂

I should have. want me to call again? lol. why don't you call and talk to the man yourself 😉 I started following my mom around again and pestering her like I did in the days before acceptance.

is the waitlist at columbia ranked? also, how many people making it on to the list?

as previously stated on this thread, we have been told that the list is unranked and that an average of 20-30 people get off it every year, however, this year seems to be having a record low number of withdrawals and last I heard the class remains overaccepted.

argh, i too froze up when i spoke with dr. frantz. i probably sounded really dumb and i really didn't know what to say. the short: the phone call lasted like a minute and i didn't get anything i had wanted to say across. probably wouldn't have helped much anyway, based on the waitlist movement this year. that's what i'm telling myself anyway...

patience, young grasshoppers. the waitlist is inevitable, but suffering is not.

IntlMD, where did you hear that the class remains overfilled?

I was told that personally on May 9.

by the man himself? he just told me that there have been fewer withdrawls than in recent years........................

it is not a grasshopper, it is a jumping pig

Sorry to have kept you guys waiting for an update but graduating takes a lot of time 😛

Let's get down to business...

First of all, I was not asked the famous question of whether I would go to Columbia if granted admission.

Hence, I was not offered admission.

Dean Frantz seems like a nice but busy man. He just asked me questions about my family/interests/hobbies/sports/instruments and checked to see whether he had my number during the summer.

He did mention that there have been an unusually low number of withdrawls thus far. He still believes that some are holding multiple acceptances or are waiting to turn down Columbia when they get off a waitlist elsewhere.

Hope that's enough info., if not let me know

Thanks for getting back to us wannabe. Is there any way for Columbia to know if people are holding multiple acceptances since it isn't AMCAS?

thanks for posting wannabe ! and congrats on graduation!

this waitlist movement is just crawling!

how does this thread have over 10,000 hits???

hey, that's not true!

i'd say at least 9,000 are from me and intlmd!

it's not as if i don't have anything to do at work and i'm just hovering over sdn or anything. =P

is there a SDN anonymous program?

I agree with Ckat, it is more along the lines of 9,000... But then again we managed to fill 12 pages of this thread with a lot of bumps, longing and very little action... It is killing me seeing Cornell, Pitt, NYU and even Penn move and NOTHING here! Wannabe, congrats on graduation! And to those curious, I work in a lab, I set up a reaction and spend the afternoon analyzing this list... No life? At this point that would be a compliment 😉

I wonder why Frantz cares so much about instruments! My years of playing jazz on the clarinet were very overlooked, so I am thinking that maybe he is looking to fill holes in some string instrument symphony orchestra or something. Aside from that, I have been thinking about updating our small list of waitlistees... so please report, if you can, your status at schools you care about more than this one. And yes, he probably just told me that the class was overfilled so I would stop calling!!!! Greeeaaaatt!

Hey,

I'm new to SDN but just thought I'd say hi ... I'm ALSO on the wait list for Columbia and it is also my first choice, I've also talked to Dean Frantz and he's told me the same as it seems he has most others ... "we'll keep you very much in mind," and the whole no one withdrawing thing. Strangely enough though my friend who is at P&S said that they only accept 150 people to begin with -- so how is it that their class is overaccepted?

Anyway I wanted to ask, too, how did anyone's second interviews go? I was recommended to do that by many P&Sers but unfortunately, since I interviewed with Dean Frantz originally, he said he doesn't see people twice.

One last thing: how many letters/phone calls have all you guys been making? Just wondering when you can cross the line between showing interest and shameless begging.

Oh Baby!!!! That line was crossed in April!!

hey vscarlet. welcome to the thread.

i'd just read the forum on people's second interview experiences.

i tried getting a second interview with dr. frantz as well, but i interviewed with him originally, so same thing, no second one offered.

as for how many letters to send, that's pretty much up to you, as to how comfortable you are with sending in a ton, or just one, or if you have new things to contribute to your file.

good luck!

I agree, it is pretty much up to you! I exaggerate things a lot, I always do that, so truthfully speaking I did not send in that many letters and I only called and spoke to Dean Frantz once. Welcome to the thread and always remember that most of the things said (esp by me) are for the sake of a little good humor... Thanks for adding your experience and if it wasn't for Dean Frantz' amazing capacity to recite page after page of Shakespeare I would not believe this "very much in mind" thing at all - however, I have witnessed the ability, oh well...

Best of luck to all!

I've sent two interest letters, one pre-waitlist, one post-waitlist asking for a second interview. I'm going down there in a few days and I feel sort of ridiculous considering it really sounds like the class is full. Oh well, this really should be the last part of the application process for me, I can really celebrate when it is over whether he offers me an acceptance or not.

Merlin, I don't think that it is to your disadvantage to go there at all. Statistically speaking this list HAS to move, it is not possible that Columbia became all of a sudden the only school w/o waitlist movement in the country when historically it has been known for it. Good luck on your second interview and please don't forget to let us know what comes of it and whether Dean Frantz reveals more of what is happening backstage. But as a word of warning, it is never over, even when he doesn't offer anything but that slightest little bit of hope that keeps people like me checking this thread so often.

good luck merlin!

let us know how it goes!

don't despair, there's always hope.... despite what the architect in the matrix says... =D

Hey guys,

Today was graduation day at Columbia, Dr. Frantz was probably busy... I think tomorrow they have a couple more events and then this list should start moving by Tuesday (with Monday being a holliday and all). I think Tuesday's golden! May 27, 2003... I wonder who will be the lucky ones!

Hey INT!! I called NYU and they said they aren't drawing from the waitlist yet! Have you heard that it is moving! Well. fo shizzle ma nizzle

My bad, it just hasn't started moving yet...

From NYU Waitlist Info thread:

"I just got off the phone with the admissions office. The woman I spoke to told me that there are about 20 spots in the class that will be filled by waitlisted people."

Good luck JM!!!
