Columbia Wait List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey intlmd. thanks for letting us know bout dr. frantz.

regarding a match for med school, not everyone would put harvard, yale etc.. cause not everyone would get interviews there.

you could only put ranks down for schools that you interviewed at.... i just think that it would save some grief on the applicants end and on the med school's end. just a thought.

yeah, i'm pursuing my other waitlists right now. hopefully they will come thru, otherwise i'll be going to my 4th choice out of 4 possible places left to me. actually looking at their 2003 match list, they do pretty well, so it wouldn't be horrible to go there.

NYMC? I think anywhere allopathic is what you make of it... With good letters from clinical rotations and good boards you will get in your residency of choice and you shouldn't worry about it - at least not so much right now. Besides, your girlfriend will be nearby... You will be happy there if all else fails. You and I are both fortunate to have back up plans to this crazy waitlist - I just keep thinking that sometimes, more often than not, things happen for a reason. Just a thought 😉 Good luck!

I just want to thank the admissions committee for taking the time for a personal response to my letter of intent. Knowing that the exact letter has gone to only several thousand applicants in the past 100 years or so makes me feel special. The fake signature was a great touch as well.

🙂

yeah, i was talking about nymc. actually looking at their match list this year, a whopping 25 students got into radiology residencies this year... that's 5x more than tufts and stony brook (2002) combined! i'm definitely thinking bout radiology as a possible career choice (that's what i'm doing right now).

yeah, it's true, i am lucky to have an allopathic school to go to. my gf will be happy at her school in manhattan and nymc is less than an hour away from my home, so my mom would be really happy. things could definitely be worse!

where are you located now intlmd? will tulane be a big move for you if that's where you end up?

regarding the letters from columbia... i sadly was delusion back in january when i got my "very much in mind" thank you card response from dr. frantz. u gotta admit, if you didn't know any better, the letters seem very personal and seem like a nice gesture. it sure fooled me, my advisor and my family! =P

It fooled me too, ckat! I remember getting it as a response to a letter that I wrote before the decisions were mailed out and I thought that I was a shoe in (silly, silly me) and the waitlist was an awful let down. Tulane is an awesome school, everyone seemed so happy there and the city was amazing too! However, I am in Philadelphia now and my boyfriend lives here and is stuck here for another 4+ years (MD/PhD), so yes, it will be a huge move for me on a personal (emotional) level. So, I am trying to avoid it at all costs by trying to "work" this waitlist, but it is not looking so good so far. The worst thing is that I am holding onto that very little bit of hope that I won't have to move and that is backing up my whole summer. My family is all in Brazil and I would like to go home after my job is done in Philly and before med school starts, but it looks like I will be searching for a last minute apartment and moving in a rush because I am still insisting that things will work out in the end... maybe they won't.

No updates in Philadelphia, not even a reply to my thank you note.
I called again today and he is out of the office, teaching... Talk about hard to get!

ugh, i'm just trying not to think about this whole thing.

just gonna sit tight for a little bit and see what happens.

just withdrew this morning - good luck guys

I think my professional opinion has to be to chill out just the slightest bit.

I think it's already exceedingly apparent to Dr. Frantz your interest in the school, and your application is hardly on the bottom of the stack being stored under a broken microwave in the darkest corner of the smallest closet of the P&S sub-basement. Just sit back and wait a few weeks; there probably haven't even been barely any spots to give you if he wanted to, and really won't begin to be until late May.

Actually, I am a lot more 'chill' about it than it seems. I just wanted to keep this thread open in case anybody hears anything else. If you check out last year's the first person got off the list on May 6 and the movement continued until early June and then basically stopped.

hence your june 15th cut off huh, intlmd? that's a really good idea, the more i think of it.

i'm pretty chill bout this whole waitlist thing now too. i've got a med school to go to, and i'm most likely gonna be in ny, so i'm just trying to enjoy my time left in boston which is only bout 5 more weeks.

did anyone who got off waitlist last year DIDN'T get a 2nd interview w/ frantz and didn't interview w/ him originally?

Hey guys. I'm a current first year at P&S. I got in off the waitlist last year around this time (May 1st, if my memory serves me correctly). My first interview was not with Dr. Frantz and I did not have a second interview. I wrote a thank you note to my interviewer and 3 additional letters to Dr. Frantz after I received my waitlist letter in February. So, you don't have to be outrageously aggressive to get in off the waitlist. Make sure Dr. Frantz knows where you stand but besides that, I don't think anyone really understands how he makes these decisions.

Good luck to all of you! Hope to see you next year!

intlmd, i pm'd.

Over the course of the last four months we have posted on this thread our stories concerning the Columbia waitlist. It amazes me that with 8000 views, this page has only about 170 replies. I invite our friends, who have lived these moments with us (and through us) to post their stories too. Let us know who you are!

Glad to know that I am not the only one 😉 I was beggining to think that I was responsible for at least 6 grand!

well, I for one keep reading it without posting as I already withdrew from Columbia but I still want to know whats going on with you guys on the waitlist! Thus its kind of interesting to read and root for you, but I don't have anything 'useful' to post 🙂

but good luck guys

Thanks for the rooting!! May I ask where you decided to go?

thanks for the support boy wonder! 😀

only a week till may 15th. let's hope those waitlists are moving!

I'm headed for Cornell. 😍 which I think is the best fit for me personally.

That's awesome! Congratulations!

How are we feeling today???
May 8 - ONE WEEK TO GO!!!

so recent reports from Dean Frantz indicate "far fewer withdrawals" than in years past . . . let's hope everyone's waiting till this last week to send them in!!! columbia's my dream . .. but it's seeming like it might just have to remain a dream if things don't change . .. anyone else out there feeling me???

I got a brief note acknowledging my two LOI's. I don't think I am going to send another one... and I think I may have to give up the Columbia dream too.

What "recent reports" are you referring to? Did you speak with him?

I heard the same thing about the fewer withdrawals. However, if you look in the Yale thread, they also are seeing fewer withdrawals, which may mean that the people holding multiple acceptances haven't decided yet... I hope that they get an avalanche of withdrawals this week, so that the list can start moving!

hey you guys. I stopped by the cornell admissions office today and, like columbia and yale, they have received only a few withdrawals so far. I was told that they might not be dipping into the waitlist pool as they did in previous years. This is bad bad news for me. Hopefully everyone is waiting until the last day to withdraw.. Good luck tho.😡

May 12 - 3 days to go!!

3 more days to go....

that's assuming things will get moving may 15th. there might be a week or two lag as applicants scramble to mail withdrawals in and then a further lag with the admissions office and the dr. frantz sorting out things....

so, i may 15th perhaps might not be the day afterall.... 😕

🙁 🙁 🙁 ...that kinda sucks. I can't complain too much, but still...Cornell's definitely my #1!

hey,

i sent columbia an update letter last week and to back a response saying that it's still early for them to know how things are, but they will keep "your candidacy very much in mind".... seemed like a generic letter. it was stamped w/ his signature (not a real one).

So I was cleaning out my room today in the pretense of trying to pack, and pulled out all my letters from Columbia to compare the sigs out of curiosity. I counted 6 letters from Columbia. 4 are signed by one person, and the other two are different. The 4 by the same person are all in response to letters that I have written, so I think those are signed by the real dean. The other two were the generic letters inviting me for an interview, and letting me know I'd been placed on the waitlist. However the latest one I received was the same form letter thanking me for my letter, it's too early to know, candidacy still very much in mind, etc. Only this one really was signed by him seeing as it's almost the same but slightly different from the other 3 that appear to bear his sig, and is also real ink and not printed (I know this because I carried out the scientifically proven and determinative test of licking my pinky finger and rubbing the letter to make sure that the ink ran) 🙂

I really should go to bed. Oh, but I can't, because I can't see my bed for all the junk on top of it that I'm supposed to be packing. 😡 Oh well, time to move all the junk onto my chair, and move it all back to my bed in the morning 😀

I did not get to the extremes of licking my pinky finger but I also hold a collection of signatures of various clones of Dr. Frantz with different handwriting. I just wanted to add that I did not even get a POSTCARD for my thank you note after the interview, maybe he just disliked meeting me 😉

By the way, this was a disguised bump.

You guys seriously need to relax. This can't be healthy.

does anyone have any actual idea of how many people are on the waitlist and how many are generally taken off??? i know there's a lot of us - i'm just trying to gauge the probability of acutally getting off of the waitlist . . . dean frantz said the other week they've gotten far fewer withdrawals, so i understand the chances may be more slim this year . .

lol...no worries, by this point whether columbia takes me off or not i am not too bothered anymore. so, i'm still a generally sane person, or insane, depending on what i was originally. if anything is driving me nuts, it's packing, not columbia. 😡

From what we've seen here there are 5 withdrawals (on the turned down acceptances forum)... I am sure that is not representative of the real number of withdrawals. According to Frantz 20-30 people get off this list, which should be huge. He said that initially it is unranked and at the end somewhat ranked. From SDN, a lot of names haved popped up like:

mirla - who is also in the first tier of the yale waitlist
ckat
xaelia
yogi bear
louweezel
demografix
jmwalker
promethius
IntlMD07
coffespoon (accepted)

... and I have officially moved to the "obsessed about the columbia waitlist" list 🙂

I have withdrawn from the waitlist. Good luck!

lol. i guess i gotta grow as a SDNer and move beyond my lists and polls. hehe...

So - Does anyone know anyone who heard from someone that maybe somewhere there is this person who is ditching Columbia tomorrow? Anyone?

The signatures. Mine are all different. Every single one. Interview, waitlist, confirmation of waitlist and confirmation of the pile of letters I sent. Oh well. I also really like NYU and I think I have a shot there.

jmwalker,

You can have my spot at NYU if Columbia, Cornell or UCs show me any love in the coming weeks. Good luck.

Z.

ps. I am with y'all on the waitlist.

Just to keep you guys updated...I have an interview with Dean Frantz on Friday. I'm really excited to finally meet him 🙂
I'll keep you guys posted about how it goes.

wannabe, how did you request a second interview? this is a prime time to have one. i'm in nyc and thinking about asking, but i have met him before. (although he wasn't my interviewer). i don't know... anyway, good luck, and let us know the good news asap!!!

Congratulations Wannabe!!! This is great timing! I had no idea he was still interviewing! I am also adding zephyr_97 to the list...

I wonder how many of us would go if offered a spot. I know I would...

wow, wannabe, that's great news! good luck on your interview!

thanks intlmd for compiling this list. it really does look like your obssessed.

hmm, maybe we should make a poll for sdners on columbia's waitlist, who would go etc...

maybe a poll now, and a poll in a month.

i just posted a poll for all of us on the waitlist... please vote!

I never thought I'd do this, but here goes: bump
