I received a straight-forward rejection, which I will not appeal.

How can you appeal a rejection anyway? I assume nothing you could say could change it?

I just got a waitlist letter (postmarked Feb 29) in Montreal.

I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions:

Does accepting to be an 'alternate' just mean you accept to being on the waiting list but if they extend an offer you are not obliged to take it?

Also, is it looked down on to send a letter of interest about the school if you are still considering other places and, depending on what happens overall, might not accept a subsequent offer?

You're correct: You don't have to accept the offer if they extend one to you.

36-60. There are reportedly about 300 on the waitlist, but I'd say that number is closer to 5 or 600. Frantz has been happy to discuss your chances around or after May in the past.

Start a letter writing campaign! Call him up! Get in there and FIGHT for that acceptance! In the past, SDN'ers have been very persistent and persuasive with their letters and have gotten in as a result.

I think that the 'highly ranked' in the letter was standard to everyone, & just means that we are ranked high enough to deserve a spot on the waitlist...

And then they were accepted sometime much later. But there was a lot of begging involved and mentions of "dream school" and "crappy interview." Just saying it's possible, and people definitely do it all the time. Just don't know how often they actually grant the interview and acceptance.

Ah, I see. Who knows if you would even get a reply to your letter anyway, or maybe people just call. Who knows. Odds are probably low.

This is kind of ridiculous, I got a letter from my parents, which has to travel through NYC to get to me today that was sent two days ago, and still nothing from P&S. I know its a rejection or WL at this point, but I mean they don't have to lie through their teeth to callers.

Rejection came today from Columbia... the letter was dated March 3rd, but the envelope was postmarked March 6th (Thursday). March has not been good to me.

That would explain the lack of rejections thus far. So much for 2/29 decisions.

Good luck to those on the wait list. I'm glad that I have some closure with this school. I knew it wouldn't work out based on how bad my interview went but I'm not too bummed as I didn't like the school all that much.

🙁 Sorry... you responded to his post, but I think it's worth repeating. Apparently, a couple people who wrote very convincing letters of interest/intent had their files reviewed again. Just give it a try!!! If you write Dean Frantz a letter, I'm sure he'd look at it and give your file another look. Put in everything you wish you could've said in the interview or could have explained about your file.

Hahaha. You'll still have wired internet, though. It just means that you'll have to download the materials in your room before you take off to study somewhere else. You'll probably leave a lot of your textbooks in your room, so you'll have to go back to your room anyway... I really don't think it's a big deal. My wireless card didn't work throughout my undergrad years, and I survived.

I'm not sure why you're concerned about the facilities. Is the wireless issue the only thing?

I think my tour guide who showed us his room in Bard said that they now have wireless internet access through the hospital, but that it took a while to get because of HIPAA concerns. I could be wrong, though. I wasn't planning on living there, so I was only half-listening.

I agree with you, though, that in general the Columbia facilities were a little disappointing. But my guess is that the quality of the education more than makes up for it.

I think Bard should be the least of anyone's worries when attending Columbia -- I don't expect that most people live there for more than a year, if at all. If I choose Columbia, I'll just try to get into the Towers or get an apartment.

During the tour of Bard and the towers, we met a first-year who lived in one of the towers and was able to do so because he already knew the upperclassman he was living with and was able to arrange to be his roommate. for me, the only problem is that most of my first year friends are female...do they do co-ed rooms in the towers? i didn't get to do the whole tour...
