This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
don't want to walk. getting grief from my family.
anybody else not walking?
anybody else care to comment?

It's mandatory by our school. I would sick it as well, if I had the chance. Never been a fan of it...

There are a lot of things in life that are not about you. This is one of them. Do it for your family.
I've also found that a number of ceremonial type things I really didn't want to go to turned out to be very meanigful and important to me later on in life.

I'm skipping walking to go on vacation. I invited my family to match day and I think they were happy with that. At this point in life I don't think anyone that knows me actually expects me to show up to optional ceremonial things.

jesus ****ing christ I forgot how smoking hot Denise Milani is.....

This may sound naive, but I'm just curious... why not walk?

Most people are already peaced out, maybe even out of the state or country and having their last hurrahs before starting residency. Who wants to go back to school for a purely symbolic ceremony?

Who doesn't want to attend a ceremony dressed like a wizard?

This.

I am a older non-trad and was tempted to skip commencement. I am glad I went now. It was a big day for the family, and I found it meaningful as well. It was a nice moment of reflection on four years for you and your classmates.

This. Had a friend who didn't walk the stage who later found it really deeply hurt their parents.

Everyone wants to see their kid walk the stage, have their name called out, and shake hands with some bigwig, and you can give your parents this pretty substantial warm-and-fuzzy for a relatively low cost--you just have to show up for a couple of hours. These things always wind up being less painful than you think they will anyways.

+1...what's the core of your wand made of?

Corpus spongiosum?

Well, it'll be ~$1500 for 3 flights, hotel and ish, and take up 2 days flying in and out as I definitely don't plan on being here at the end of 4th year. That's hefty to me. They've been through 3 graduations already (masters), is it really necessary to go to one more?

I always thought it should be a personal choice as well, however, I think schools make it mandatory to increase the "wow factor". I know mine in particular always loved to gloat about their number of professional students including DOs.

Survivor DO

How can it be "mandatory"?

Just say you're "sick". What's the dean going to do, personally come pick you up at your house/verify if you're sick? If you really don't want to go, I'm sure you could weasel out of it somehow.

Tail hair from a Thestral.

And if anyone actually gets that without having to look it, congratulations you are almost as pathetic as I am.

I remember a specific episode on the wards last year when someone made an incorrect HP reference, and I proceeded to correct them. *sighs*

If your family wants to go, just do it for them. Use it as an opportunity to say goodbye to some of the classmates you've gotten to know over the years.

if you dont want to go and nobody in your family cares, skip it

if your parents even hint that its important to them, suck it up and go, for them. its the least you can do.

wtf just go

everyone knows you have nothing else better to do

this reminds me of the people who no showed to our white coat ceremony first year just cause we had an exam a few days later
