My school made a very odd (and poor, IMO) selection for my class' commencement speaker. Overall, my class isn't pleased...especially when the undergrad commencement speaker for my school is President Bush.

Out of curiosity, who's going to be your school's commencement speaker?

Wouldnt it make sense to tell people who your commencement speaker is before asking others who theirs is?

Thats too bad DrMom, feel free to wear your "not my president" graduation gown...

But Congrats just the same!

I can't remember who ours was. He had a pretty boring speech, but at least it was pretty short.

This year Penn is having Jodie Foster speak. 😡 👎

You know, Maya Angelou, Bono, Nelson Mandella, sure you can throw Jodie Moster right in the mix...

You misunderstood. The undergraduate commencement at OSU has the president. The medical school commencement has a veterinarian from our OSU. They didn't even bother to get someone from outside of the institution.
Nothing wrong with vets at all, but I'm sure the vet grads would find it odd to have an OSU DO do their commencement speech.

yeah, I'd be a little disappointed as well.

Our second years at NYCOM are having Richard Jadick D.O. speak at their white coat ceremony, the guy who was on the cover of newsweek (The infamous Hero MD). Not sure who is speaking at commencement though, probably not someone nearly as cool.

nycom's speaker is Matthew Schure, Ph.D.; the President and Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine....

LOL

We at Western Univ feel your pain

The speaker is a PharmD, the outgoing College of Pharmacy Dean who sleeps in the same bed as President Pumerantz

Get this, President Pum opened the Western U Library and names it "Phillip and Harriet Pumerantz" Library

His wife is sometimes referred to as "The 1st Lady of Western University"

It's like having President Bush make a statue of himself while still president. Can't you wait until AFTER your term to immortalize your name???

that's...for a lack of better word, really.......sad (the funds runnin low over there at NY? 😀 lol)

It was supposed to be Carrot Top, but he can't make it.

Jack Daniels since I don't plan on attending graduation. Two years ago we had Gov. Ed Rendell. That's fine as long as he did nort don't get too political. My nightmare would be Susan Sarandon or Oprah. Jodie Foster is an interesting choice for Penn. What is the real purpose for a comencement speaker. I can't imagine that Jodie Foster would be able to lend insight to the future of medicine or the graduating class at Penn unless they wanted to be medical consultants for Hollywood or get their own TV show like Dr. 90210.

Maybe next year PCOM will have the President and Chief Executive Officer of NYCOM....

My guess is that Dr. Schure being the former President of NYIT before coming to PCOM has something to do with the selection

And to disappoint raptor5, I think physical attendance at commencement is required in order to be conferred a degree at PCOM (check out that handbook that you get every year). Now whether or not the school will enforce that little regulation ... don't ask me

But you can always try to bring your friend Jack Daniels along with you to commencement =) - will make walking across the stage a little more interesting

I know. Special circumstances that actually don't involve Jack Daniels. But anyway, thanks for your concern.

How was Jadick? I heard you guys had your white coat ceremony yesterday..

Wasn't there a school who had Mr. T as their speaker? I believe that his closing statement consisted of: "I pity the fool who don't go D.O.!!"

That has to be the fourth doctorate of laws Bush has received. My alma mater gave him one a couple years ago.

Well, considering my law school rejected him, maybe he needs some help. 🙂 OSU's a safe place for unpopular Republican presidents -- Nixon spoke there after the Watergate scandal broke, and now they get W.

Why does everyone assume that those who oppose Bush and the Republican Party must be a Democrat?

I suppose if you oppose the Republican party you may be a member of the Green Party, but a large majority would be a member of the Democractic Party.

Here's the cheesiest one I ever heard of! I went to see a friend of mine graduate from the 2003 AZCOM class. That was the last class to have its own graduation ceremony, now they are lumped in with all the PA's and anyone else graduating. Anyway, the speaker was the Provost at the Yapipai Community College (apparently a local 2 year undergraduated institution) and this dude didn't even have a doctorate degree in anything. I felt sorry for my friend who had family and friends coming from out of town to see this. What a let down after 4 years of hard work.

Yeah, that would be lame, but graduation ceremonies are pretty much worthless anyway, imo. 😛

Agreed.....are you all required to attend your commencement? My current (undergraduate) school mandates it, or they will not issue you your diploma. Granted I don't care about it, because they still will release my transcripts and that's all I am concerned about.....

I don't even know who is speaking at my graduation (AZCOM) - I hope nobody - those darn things are too long anyway...especially since it is every stupid school on campus.

Agreed, as long as I get my diploma, I don't care who speaks as long as they don't get long-winded.

Nothing worse than sweating in your cap and gown while some dude you've never heard of rambles on and on about his life especially when it isn't even interesting!

If I decide to attend (read as, if I have nothing better to do) I will take my MP3 player and not pay a bit of attention to what the commencement speaker has to say.

I think I'd opt not to go than to risk getting busted by administration listening to an MP3 player during commencement. I've heard enough scary tales about people getting caught doing things the day before or the day of commencement and suffering the consequences that I wouldn't wanna chance it.
