Is it true that adcoms will want to see a pre-professional committe letter if my school has such a thing? I was told by my dept chair that I applied to schools they would instantly know about the committe and would refuse me flat out because of the absence of a committee letter particularly. I am unable to get said letter because I chose to go a different route other than the required biology major.

If your school does have a premed committee, you should have one sent to the schools you are applying to. However, I do not know if schools would reject you if you sent recommendation letters from professors and professionals you have shadowed rather than a committee letter. I am pretty sure you could still get a premed committee letter even if you are not a Biology major...at least you could where I went to school. You just had to make sure to register with the premed committee your freshman year and they would help you with the process and in your junior year would interview you and write a premed committee letter for you.

You should still be able to get a committee letter, because your undergrad school SHOULD do that for every pre-med, not just bio majors. I don't know about the whole "refuse you flat out if you don't have specifically a committee letter" thing, but I do know that IF your school DOES in fact have a pre-med committee, then there should be no problem getting a letter. I was a bio major, but I still had to do the interview because there is more than just bio profs on the board, so not everyone knows you. It’s good practice for the real thing, and then they can write a better letter. I don’t know about every school, but at mine it goes like this: you send them your personal statement and set a date for the interview, you interview, they write a letter. Simple.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

guess I wasn't fast enough, they got to the submit button before me...sorry for the redundancy!

That is just the thing. In order to be considered "Pre-Med" the school requires you declare biology or Biochemistry as a major. They are a bullheaded lot down there. I was even told that I would not even get into med school anyway because of my low GPA which was 3.2 at the time I was told that. I still have two more years and time to drag my GPA up. It is just rough here.

I think that just may be hype. You apply with what you have and if asked, you tell them the story of why you couldn't get the letter. So basically, anyway, you are saying in all actuality that you do not have pre-med committee (yourself) because of your major. I'd be suprised if you'd be flat out rejected because of not having a committee letter.

im in the same boat and i dont plan on having a letter sent from the commitee.

i was a philosphy major, and actually didnt want to ask the commitee because the head of the commitee was so rude: she actually told me as i was transfering that i should rethink my decision to be a doctor, and this is the first time she ever met me. anyways, i would never ask for a letter from her, and if a school wont accept me based on the fabulous letters from my philosophy proffesors and other science teachers, then ... take it where you wish

good luck

Anyone applying to medical school can get a committee letter. You don't have to be a biology major.

If your school does not allow this, then you should take legal action.

In order to apply to medical school, you can submit 3 letters of recommendation in lieu of the committee, for now.

P.S. It is the job of the committee to belittle you and discourage you. I was told that I'd never be admitted to medical school. I was admitted to 3, and was invited to interviews at 5.

I hope you were being sarcastic here as noted in your sig. I pay these faculty members with my hard earned money(now or later), I go to a private university and I am certain of this. For them to do this would be unethical and unwise. Me a countless others could just advise anyone wanting to go to medical school to avoid this institution altogther, with the internet and all. I just think these people don't know what they are talking about, and just don't care. 🙁

Hey Mastamark, I don't know where all you intend on applying but I know for KCUMB, you don't have to have a committee letter. It states if getting one is not possible you can substitute it for another LOR from a science prof.
