hey all,

havent posted for awhile, been studyin for aug mcat. n e ways, just wondering if it would be a bad idea if i didnt do a committee letter through my campus LOR service. Our service has the choice of not doing it, and just sending out the letter. Thanks all and good luck!!!!!!

I'm not using a committee letter. I wouldn't sweat it if you have good LORs.

I would just be prepared to explain why you did not sit before the committee. It could raise some eyebrows if any med schools know that your undergraduate institution has a premedical committee and you still dont have a letter from them.

I would say that it is generally not a good idea to decide not to go through your undergrad's premed committee. The committee's approval could be one of the strongest assets for your application. But everyone has their reasons for using them or not.

Just check about the different medical schools' stances on the premed commitees before paying the money to send them your primary. Many schools state in their secondary form that if your school has a premed committee, then you MUST submit a composite letter from them. University of Kentucky is one I can think of off hand, but I know there are others from the ones I have applied to this cycle...(too lazy to look and see who they are)

Of course, the main thing is just to have the best LOR's you can. 3 strong LOR's from independent writers is much better than an average composite letter from a committee any day. Good luck.

Yea....if you have some good LORS outside of the committee one then don't worry. Just have a good reason to back yourself up.

Here's why I skipped the committe:
-one person said "you sure this is what you want? how about optometry?"
-another person said "medicine is pretty long haul, how about nursing?"

throw in a few more negative comments, and you have my committee.

my profs. on the other hand were strong supporters and told me to stick to my goal. I stuck with them.

The committee at my school let me know how they were going to recommend (highly... with reservations... strait recomend.... etc, and we had the choice of wether or not to have them send the letter out. Even a recomend (3/4) is good to have from a committee.

This is a great reason. Personally I transferred and wasn't eligible since at my school from freshman year you need to be putting evaluations from all professors in your folder. But like you said, I know my LOR writers better than a premed committee. Sometimes pre med committees just don't do the just at the time they are supposed to.

Check to see when you committee sends out the LOR. Mine sent them out after interviewing every single candidate. Therefore, my letters did not go out until the end of November although my file was complete in June. That might be one good reason to skip the committee LORs.
