common names s,p,d orbitals

this is on the list of topics on the ps section...what are the common names for the s,p,d orbitals...?
It's originally based on arcane spectroscopy emission data. s = sharp, p = principle, d = diffuse, f = fine. After f, it goes according to the English alphabet system.

so the electrons in the s orbitals give sharp lines...vs. those in d orbitals give diffuse lines...what exactly does p orbital give...what does principle mean?

Those are more like trivia answers that MCAT will probably not test you on. HOwever, if you are really intersted, you can probably use wikipedia to ur advantage.
