during my last two interviews, they asked me about my shadowing, any experiences in dentistry, and volunteer works.
how much do schools consider these things for the decision making??
and how common is to get accepted in first year of application?

I've been told by many people that schools look at shadowing experience and vounteer experience as well. Basically, they want the well rounded applicant with a good personality.

Everyone hears different stories. Some people will say GPA and DAT are all that matter. Others say a well rounded student. Others say people with dental experience are more likely accepted. Others say people who are young or old or married or single are more liely to be accepted.

Now that I am in school, I can honestly say...it's all true. There are people here at my school who have just graduated college and never did any dental volunteering. People who were presidents of their classes, people with kids, singles, every ethnicity, people with crap loads of dental volunteering experience, lots of various religions, and everything else. Overall, we all had fairly high grades and DAT scores, but even that is not unilateral.

The best thing you can probably do is do the things YOU think will make you the best applicant and ignore the rest...you can't do everything.

Something like a third of all applicants gained admission last year. It is common but the odds are, one might have to reapply.
