communication between schools

Any idea how much communication goes on between schools about applicants prior to admissions? Can a person not be accepted at school X because they told school y they would definitely go there if admitted and school x knows school y is going to admit them? (I'm not in this situation; just wondering if anybody had a perception of the situation.)

i'm not sure about private schools but i've heard there is quite a bit of communication amongst state schools, or at least within the UC system.

i can't remember when, but AMCAS will at some point, release the names of all the schools we're holding places in.

I believe AMCAS puts out a list after May 15 listing who is accepted at which school(s). I remember hearing somewhere.
