After doing some research, it seems that dental schools frown upon students taking prereqs at a CC. I’ve basically took most of my prereqs at a community college. This includes Bio 1 and 2. Chem 1 and 2. Physics 1 and 2. Calculus 1 and 2. I’m finishing up Organic Chemistry right 2 right now. My GPA is around 3.6 cumulative. Science GPA is around 3.5. Do I even have a chance at getting accepted in the future. I know I still have to take the DAT but this seems like a big problem. Can anyone speak from experience if they have gone this route? Thanks.

Edit: I will be transferring to a University and plan on taking upper division science classes. I still have to take Biochem. My state of residence is CA.

I took the same pre-reqs at a CC. If you do well once you transfer you should be fine.

Feels good to know there are others. Do you mind telling me your stats and what state you are in? Thanks.

I took every single prerequisite at my CC prior to transferring. I then took many upper division bio and chem courses after transferring. Not a single interviewer ever brought up anything about CC.

Nice! Do you mind sending me your school list? I would really appreciate it. From the looks of it, did you do your undergrad at UCD? I’m actually transferring there soon.

I did my undergrad at a UC but didn't have a bio/chem major, so I took all those same pre-reqs at a CC after undergrad. Interestingly, I found I actually learned way more at CC than UC. If you did well in those pre-reqs, continue to do well at UCD, and get a strong DAT score, you will be fine!

I did essentially all of my pre-reqs at a Community College other than Biochem - they're all classes you'd be taking in your first and second years as a Bio Major anyways, so I felt like I needed to stay on track or be way behiend after transferring. There are a few schools that really don't like community college credits, but some just say that - I was accepted to a school that said they didn't take CC classes as pre-reqs. California has some really great community colleges (go Cypress!), were you'll actually learn much better than you would in the UC version, and often be held to a higher standard. As long as you can show that your GPA doesn't do a major drop when you transfer, and you're staying competitive, it's not a big deal. Good luck!
