There have been a plethora of threads relating to pharmacist job market saturation and unnecessary proliferation of pharmacy schools/class sizes. I was wondering how many people have had to relocate in order to find a job or if you were lucky to find a position in the area you wanted how long you had to commute.

Setting: Retail, hospital, industry, academia, etc.
Which area or state: Southern/Midwest, CA/FL/NY, etc.
Urban or Rural: Urban or Rural
Relocation: Yes/No
Commute time: In minutes

For myself:
- 1st job out of school (graduated within the last 5 years)
Setting: 700 bed academic teaching hospital
Which area or state: Southern states
Urban or rural: Rural
Relocation: Yes, 2.5 hours from home
Commute time: < 15 minutes. However outside of work, there is nothing to do and the nearest major city is about 60 miles or an hour away

- Current job:
Setting: 300-500 bed community hospital
Which area or state: Southern states
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: No, would love to move closer to work but familial obligations prevent that
Commute time: 45-50 minutes with no traffic if I leave early enough, 60 to 90 minutes during rush hour or some type of accident. About a 45-55 mile commute

Setting: hospital health system outpatient
Area: PNW
Urban or rural: urban
Relocation: No.
Commute time: 1 hr to drive and 15 minutes to park.

I quit my full time job in retail (30 minute commute - burned out) for this per-diem job (16-24 hours a week) and I'm still looking for a job. Seven years experience in four retail settings.

Sad thread 1h+ commute, retail burn outs, number of yrs of experience and can't get a job you want.

#stateofpharmacynow

More sad replies to follow? lol

I'm one of them, hate pharmacy 3 months after graduation (wage ceiling crap, no career growth, shrinking job market, trading time for $); I'm looking to do something else... But too lazy also LMAO so it's partly my fault.

Setting: Government

Which area or state: DC or wherever I am

Urban or rural: Exurban when home, BosWash Megaopolis or Austin at the IRS AFC Woodward complex data center.

Relocation: Yes, constantly, Delta Million Miler from work alone and get more radiation every six months than I had my entire career in radiopharmacy.

Commute time: Including wake up, 20 mins and two floors (within building). Rarely bother getting a hotel at DC HQ and just sleep in the basement in the guest quarters. If at a hotel, no more than two blocks from Farragut or across the street from Woodward.

That's what I was trying to gauge. With the job market the way it is, been seeing people having to commute longer for jobs and even having to relocate to an undesirable BFE for work on top of investing > $200K in tuition and 6-8 years of schooling.

Doing a residency does help open more door to other opportunities and more jobs. Recommend it to all students I precept.

Setting: amb care
Geography: PNW
Urban setting
No relocation necessary
Commute: 10-15 minutes
Practicing: 6 years

Setting: Retail
Which area or state: Midwest
Urban or Rural: Rural
Relocation: Yes
Commute time: <5

In the middle of a sparsely populated county, the biggest city of 40k is +50 miles away. Had to relocate from 2 states away because the job market is -completely- saturated (Kansas, if you must know). Been here for 2 years now and while I enjoy it immensely, my spouse and I feel like life is passing us by or waiting for us to rejoin civilization.

1st job out of residency (2013)
Setting: hybrid position in a hospital
Which area or state: Northern CA
Urban or rural: Suburban
Relocation: Moved across the country from East Coast, as no one locally was hiring me unless I wanted to do overnight
Commute time: 25-30 minutes driving there, 40-45 minutes back

- Current job:
Setting: clinical specialist in a hospital
Which area or state: Maryland
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: Moved back across the country, now about 2 hours drive away from where I originally wanted to be. Again, 2 interviews in my original desired area prior to this, but market is too competitive and I did not ultimately get hired.
Commute time: 20 minute bus ride or 30 minute walk--1.4 miles. Originally 11-minute walk but I wanted to buy a place.

Not sure if I'll stay here or move again in a few years. Owning property here is cheap, and there are enough amenities to keep me occupied, but a larger city with a less negative morale of its inhabitants (and a better dating pool) would be nice. At least I don't hate my job anymore and don't live in fear of killing a patient due to understaffing.

Yeah one of the major negatives for me when i think about living in a extremely rural area or even a rural area is the dating pool. As long as I am able to have high speed internet so i can play online games and connect with ppl online it's not too bad but i imagine it would be very hard to find a wife in a rural area that may not have that many women in it.

Couple minutes from work, great city outside major city. Occasionally I walk or ride bike to work.

At least you're not a man trying to find a husband. That's tough in almost any location.

Setting: Hospital
Which area or state: FL
Urban or Rural: Suburban
Relocation: No
Commute time: < 5 minutes

1st job out of school
Setting: ~150 bed hospital/part of large regional healthcare system
Which area or state: Florida
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: ~1200 miles from home (and this was a good thing)
Commute time: ~40-50 minutes at first, then 15 minutes when I moved closer

2nd job
Setting: Large specialty hospital
Which area or state: Arkansas
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: ~1200 mile back home (and this was a bad thing)
Commute time: 20 minutes or so

3rd job
Setting: Large specialty hospital
Which area or state: Washington State
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: ~2300 miles from home (and I hope this is a good thing)
Commute time: TBD but looking around 20 minutes

Lesson learned: I need to stop moving

I think it's easier for women to find a man than vice versa. You don't really hear about incel (involuntary celibate) females. Almost all incels are male.

- 1st job out of school (graduated within the last 5 years)
Setting: Industry (Consulting)
Which area or state: NYC
Urban or rural: Urban
Relocation: No
Commute time: 75 minutes each way (10 min. drive + 55 min. express train + 10 min. walk), but I work from home two days per week all year round. Monthly train ticket is $363/month from out on Long Island, but I park in the town lot for free with a decal.

1st job out of school:
Setting: Retail
Which area or state: NY - Long Island
Urban or Rural: Rural
Relocation: No
Commute time: Started off an 8 minute drive, then moved so it turned into 25 minutes.

2nd/current job
Setting: Retail
Which area or state: NY - Long Island
Urban or Rural: Rural
Relocation: No
Commute time: 6 Minutes

I've gotten very lucky in my short career so far with my commutes. My current job is very close to my home and I only do a max of 800 scripts a week, which is down from the 3,500 weekly at my previous job.

I’ve relocated 2000 Miles, twice. But both were because I was recruited, not because I couldn’t find a job at my current location.
