I don't get it what's wrong with Mission?

There's not too much wrong with Mission, but Adapt made the good point that the intersection at 71 and Mission is a bit of a pain because of the long times in-between green lights.

Also, it sometimes seems like an eternity going through all the stoplights (especially when you have bad luck and hit all the reds) and passing the police station on the way to school on Mission. It's also just a bit more dangerous driving around in Pomona due to bad drivers, so folks gotta be a bit more careful.

Well I don't know what you consider massive but if the roomie is cool with it then I don't see why we can't use our spot for the well deserved fiestas that are soon to come. 👍

nice, well let's not forget the occasional "poker nights" either 😉. Well I'll be living in West Covina, a little farther away, but nice drive down the 10 freeway. Anybody else in the 626 area code? Late,

Dr. DOn

My roommate and I found a place at san dimas! it is 7 miles, but nice neighborhood, and there are other COMPers living in the complex. do you guys think San Dimas is good idea!!! ooh and the Commutte is against the traffic!
as far as the outside Loan, I am still thinking about it, but i am planning on Citibank!! for those who applied to citibank, are the rates good!!!?
I think all of us are "gunners".... So I am looking forward to long nights of studying with the study groups....take care you all! 😉

You are the man Dr. Don, my thoughts exactly re: poker night....speaking of which, I'll be kicking it with the "rounders" tonight, but they play crazy stuff that I still am trying to get a handle on. I'm more of a purist (or beginner, take your pick) in that I really only appreciate Vegas-style...no wilds, no bugs, no burns.

Funny thing is, one of our radiologists where I work loves poker and he has had this group of fellas (some as long as 20+ years) that play 1 friday a month, dinner put on by the host at the hosts house. These guys play some dirty stuff. I generally don't win, or break even for that matter, but all that is gonna change tonight!

I'm always down for some poker. I know some wild games, but prefer a straight up game. Holdem is fast becomming a favorite of mine.

NO LIMIT TEXAS HOLD'EM THE ONLY PURE POKER GAME LEFT

usually play $100 dollar buy in, but when I'm with family and friends it's mainly just quarter games, max $1 raises...you know just a friendly game. Hey JMC and Thefish, a couple of us on this board, including our favorite gunner Adapt 😀 😉 will probably get together and play once the quarter starts (well once in a while). Also there is talk of starting a poker club, if there isn't one already established at Western.

Of course, poker is secondary to studying though. Gotta prioritize 👍

good luck tonight JMC and hopefully we can all get together and play some cards. I got the chips (vegas style baby!!!).

Welcome Fish-man, glad to have you on board.

And Dr. Don, definitely got to prioritize, no mistake about it, but also have to look forward to something (other than the hugs and kisses from my girls)...and the way I see it, I'll be glad to volunteer as the first to host what should be some great times and great games.

Gentlemen (and ladies, of course), we're in for some tough times ahead, but nothing like going down in the blaze of fire, fury, bullets and glory with some good friends. And when someone is wounded, we turn back and get 'em out alive...never leave your men behind, it just isn't civilized.

I'm out.

I'm considering Phillips Ranch, La Verne, Claremont, and Montclair. Based on the map that I bought at a local gas station, they're the closest to Pomona. But I saw in the apartment booklets at the admissions office that Phillips Ranch is pretty expensive, on par with Chino Hills. Any of you guys have positive/negative things to say in regards to living in these cities (and possibly other cities)?

I've been in Phillips Ranch for 3 weeks and have ZERO complaints...if you can fork over the cash it's well worth it.

as for alternative loans...i went with access (them being non profit sold me) and i got the 0% loan fee cuz of my great credit yay me and i got the 3.7% rate and i can pay it off whenever w/ no penalty. check em out

i'm so down for poker!!! we can have some hold em nights at our pad too heck that's why i applied for alternative loans...all for poker buy ins!!! haha

i agree w/ friedcfood...social gatherings are a must because we are bound to go insane if we don't!

August 4th is creepin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱

Hey JMC Marine Corps, are you HPSP? Or are there any other applicants out there (4 year or 3 year)? I must agree with you JMC...NEVER leave a man (or a colleague) behind. We will get through this fun, crazy rollercoaster called medical school if we stick it out togther.

No HPSP here. On the fence about it too. Passed on a quasi-opp @ USUHS (offered post-bac year followed by matriculation following year contingent on B's or better), but after I got a speeding ticket on base by a Squid-Nazi (who cut me no slack and acted as though my high and tight wearing, blonde haired, blue-eyed self was an iminent threat to national security) I was reminded about what I didn't like about my military experience  (don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't have done it any other way).

HPSP, obviously, is not USUHS, but I'm still not sold on the idea of having little say about where I go, etc. I did that once, not crazy about doing it again -- but still considering it....how bout you guys. Anyone taking advantage of a monthly stipend and free tuition and supplies in exchange for your soul 😱 j/k not that bad.

Yea, I'm doing the HPSP thang. At least I am applying right now, 3-year scholarship with the USAF (I kinda want to get my pilots license too, you get a discount for private license training). 🙂 Plus, I happen to be one of those few mildly conservative, patriotic souls left. I might act a little crazy/stupid sometimes but I do believe in giving back a little to the country that allows me so much freedom. My Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather all served in the military. Who knows, perhaps I will really like it.

God bless Ryan and God bless America! <Hand salute> <"Stars and Stripes" playing in the background> 👍

I have my Navy Medical Corps pamphlet right here on my desk...I have been thinking hard about it, because more than likely I could end up in SD once again. 32nd street, Naval Hospital SD, Camp Pendleton. But again, still not 100% sure.

Okay, well I didn't win big, but I managed to walk with 12 of my 20 so I am making steady progress. The radiologist is obviously the brains of the bunch, because he is always reading two draws ahead and reading everyone's face. Crazy, he gets the luckiest draws, but he seems to always put himself in a position to do so...not sure how he does it...I need to study the game a bit more. I think he would hold his own at the World Series of Poker...as for me, forget about it.

He was on call last night...got paged at 12AM, had to split to go read some films for possible emergency surgery. As screwy as it sounds...I honestly can't wait!

JMC, are you thinking Rads?

I have a question for current COMP students or for anyone else that may know. A part of the budget allows $2800 in books and supplies for the year which figures to about $1400 each semester. I was wondering if books are really going to cost that much per semester and if this figure is accurate.

Also, is our loan money going to go into some kind of Western account or to our own checking accounts. If it's our own accounts how do we arrange it to go there. Thanks.

At a quick glance, that probably coincidences more with the book list that they give you at the beginning of the year. Please do not get everything on the list unless you are on some scholarship where they will reimburse it all. Talk to ISAC'ers, SAPP'ers, and upperclasspeople to figure out what books are really necessary, which are optional, and which are not worth your money unless you have loads extra to spend. You can definitely spend some of that money elsewhere...

the first financial aid check you get in person to deposit into your account. after that, i believe they do direct deposit.

as for books, i doubt you'll be spending that much but it just depends. this is my opinion of important items for anatomy:

-Netter, of course
-Clinically Oriented Anatomy by Moore and Dalley
-get a Stedman's medical dictionary, then put the CD-ROM on your laptop and use that bastard. you'd be amazed at how it can help.
-A dissecting kit. if you can, get one a little early. some people in our class had to wait a week because the bookstore ran out, and working with too few instruments can suck. you don't have to get one from COMP (mine was from CSULB and had more stuff in it)
-Rohen (dead body book)- most people i've talked to love it. it helps me to get a feel for what structures look like because looking at netter all the time can screw you up. McMinn can also work, but has comparatively more bone pictures and less muscular structures.

Optional stuff:
-Clinical anatomy made ridiculously simple by Goldberg- i like it because it delivers funny drawings, mnemonics and good information. it's not essential, though
-(really optional) Grant's dissector- they say it's required, but i've only cracked mine when wanting to consult another source for a structure. also works well when you want to study while you eat at a restaurant because it's not such a gross-out book.
-Flashcards- if they work for you, the bookstore has a good selection of ones by Netter and these other ones that are very specific for nerves, bones, muscles, etc.

i think all in all i spent about $300, and that's with having gotten a moore and dalley book given to me. they say it's the largest part of our MS1 so maybe it won't be that expensive.

I see. So could we realistically spend less than $500 a semester for books? Also, does the direct deposit go into an account that we choose or a Western account? Thanks again. 🙂

well, it might be about $500, but remember we have a lot more classes than just anatomy during the regular semester. if you buy your books from 2nd year students and don't buy what you don't need, you should save some money. the library has most of our required books in it, as long as you can get your hands on them.

i'm pretty sure we set the direct deposit up to go into our regular accounts.

yes our 2,000 will go to our accounts (minus some outstanding balances that you might have).

Dr. Jack, how's studying? Are you going to go to the lab today? I know a lot of ISAC people are, but for us driving all the way there is no fun 🙁 . I am just gonna study at home today.

good luck, see you tomorrow 🙂 .

i'm trying to get the energy to drive there, but i have to go. did you go yesterday? i decided it would be better if i studied from the notes before i reviewed the cadavers.

have fun studying today.

well not bad JMC, at least you came home with some money. I went to play no limit $100 dollar buy in. TWo hours later, made $125 and called it a night.

Do we have to sign anything to get direct deposit?

I want to read ahead before school starts but I'm just having too much fun that I don't really want to spoil anything. I figured I'm going to be reading like crazy once school starts, so what's the hurry? 🙂 take care you all,

so are the profs giving you guys a lot of pointers about what to expect on the first anatomy test?

is it multiple choice/short answer? is it mostly identification or do they throw in a lot of clinical info as well? is the ID direct or do they ask questions indirectly?

good luck with the first exam; you guys have been studying hard so i'm sure it will pay off!

Just for everyone to know, on the front page of www.westernu.edu, it has links to information about Orientation and other things for incoming students.

I read on the page about the white coat ceremony that we have to bring white coats. Do we have to buy it ourselves or are they going to supply them to us for free? I'm thinking they're going to give it to us but I just wanted to make sure.

can only bring two guests?!! WTF?! My immediate family alone is like 6...this blows.

A MSII told me that the white coats are donated to us by last years class, don't know if this is a fact though....Melancholy can you clear this up....oh yea and what is an "Gold Foundation" pin?

Dr. Don,
I was told by someone in SA office that a limited number of 'extra' tickets will become available, but they try to keep the numbers down because of limited space. If you really need extra tickets just ask SA about it I am sure that they will be willing to do their best to accommodate you.

I see. Just as long as we don't have to buy the coat ourselves it's fine.

Well I changed my name again but this time it will be the last time. The reason is because Slickness/Adapt had too much baggage from post history so I might as well start fresh with a new name since I'm starting school soon. Yes I know I'm crazy like that but bear with me. 😀

so how many names are you known by in real life? do you have like 60 identities and travel the US marrying innocent young women and then diappearing? or marrying rich older women and then taking their money and dissappearing? have i seen you on old reruns of "unsolved mysteries" on Lifetime?

The way they made it sound, we have to buy it!!! i dont know, but that is my understanding. besides i wouldnt want to give mine away when i am done with school, so i cant see how we'll get it from previous year people... 😕

We have to buy our own coats?

MAng, school hasn't started and I feel like i have to do a millions things.

so which one are you seputro? i was the one that spent most of today sitting in the back row, wanting to hide under the desks and cry for my mommy. i'm rarely that shy, but it felt so scary not to know ANYONE- it was on par with my first day of kindergarten. it was wonderful to talk to arlsoonDO at the end of the day and realize that we do, in fact, sort of know each other. we're even in the same lab group.

ISAC was ok. the cadavers begin tomorrow, and we're studying the osteology of the vertebral column and the scapula in preparation. we have about 50 pages to read on stupid $hit like anatomical planes and disarticulated half-skeletons that leave bone dust all over everything. it's gonna be a a$$ kicking 6 1/2 weeks, but at least i won't be bored out of my skull all day like dohza was today. :meanie: :meanie: :meanie:

Ok...i finally logged onto this thing again. =)

I'm the one that usually sits in the back left of the class. And i'm so screwed for the test this Thurs, but I was able to get in a LITTLE bit of studying done this weekend. It's just so hard to get back into study mode. grrr...

Poker?!?! I'm down to play some. I have very limited experience playing no limit. I've been mostly playing $6-$12 limit games.

hello all, yeah what's up with that white coat thing??!!! 😡 I'm still mad/dissapointed at this whole 2 guest only for the ceremony.... If it was up to me I'll like to have my whole family there, and trust me, it's a BIG family. but oh well...

hey seputro, 6-12 games huh? well that's almost like no limit, well at least the concept behind it. You raise 12 bucks, I doubt a 7/3 offsuit will call you, and that's why I mainly play no limit, so that I can eliminate the luck factor as much as I can, and play skill poker. I figured, if I'm going to play "luck" poker, I'll rather play for quarters 🙂 . Looking forward to meeting you guys! late

About the white coats:

The school provides you with one - you pick them up at the bookstore, along with your name badge.

Soon, if not already, you should receive a form that asks you what size coat you want, and the exact spelling of your name you want on your name badge (and the choice of pin or clip in back). These things are provided for you.

They also give these little gold pins - 'humanism in medicine', if I recall.

Lost mine.

That's decent of them. I did see that part on the other sheet about picking up our white coats but the way it made it sound on the white coat sheet was that we had to have one already.

As for bringing only 2 people, it does suck but I think most schools only allow a few people to come.

hmmmm, clean slate eh?

that gives me an idea- may be i should rename myself jack the ripper, on account of my superlative dissecting skills in gross. 😀

u know u like the name jack
don't even try to deny it

let's see how that life long passion lasts after he takes his first anatomy exam.

I feed off of the stress of studying for anatomy. Anatomy is one of my favorite subjects so yes I can't wait for you to see how well the LIFE LONG PASSION glows when all are worn out.
