hey all,
did you get your health forms AFTER sending in both deposits? i was accepted a few weeks ago and am just sending in my initial deposit, but i have all my immunizations done already. i tried to ask the admissions office if i should just send them in or wait for the forms, and never got a response!
so...when did you all get these forms?

You should call them to ask about it. I received my forms after I sent in the first deposit back in December. Maybe they will send it to you after you send in the first one also.

Welcome to COMP ellemarii! See ya there.

welcome welcome

Glad to have you on board!!

thanks guys!!!

hey, i remember seeing on this board somewhere that a bunch of comp newbies were going to get together before starting this fall...

have you all done that already? or were there plans to get together this summer sometime?

i'm in az right now, but am planning on going out in the next few months to get an apartment set up, etc.

it would be great to put some faces to all the people i'm constantly reading about!!! 😀

Where did u find an apt.?

I think we were thinking about meeting sometime in the summer...when the class if more or less filled. I grew up in the LA area...so if there's any questions you have, feel free to ask.

Hey DoHzA...I haven't found one as of yet, but I think someone (Slickness maybe???) posted a link on here for apts listed by the Claremont Colleges which was quite helpful. My prof is an alum from Comp and recommended Claremont as the place to live - good area, free access to Claremont Colleges libraries, etc. He also suggested some of the apts, specifically Claremont Apts, Indian Hill Villas, and anything on Foothill Blvd (or anything on Indian Hill). Not sure if these are still considered to be good areas, as he did graduate a bit ago. 😉

Here's the link in case I was delusion...

http://www.cuc.claremont.edu/realestate/download.htm

This summer sounds great...it'll give me a chance to escape the 110+ heat here in the desert! It's already over 90 degrees here - in March - I'm ready to move to California!

Friedcfood - how far is Anaheim from Pomona? I have a back-up plan for housing (basically free rent with a friend of a friend) if I get screwed and can't find anything! Not the ideal situation, as I'm sure it's not close???

Looking forward to meeting you all! 😎

Yea I posted that link awhile ago. Claremont is definitely the nice place to live. It's right by Clarmont college so that they have a little area where there's all kinds of stores and starbucks right there.

I remember also seeing a sign that they're trying to build a starbucks right by school so that's cool. In terms of Anaheim to Pomona you might be looking at a 30 minute drive each way on the freeway but I'm not sure about that.

The apartments in Claremont (about 6 of them lined on the same street) are about 8 minutes or 3 miles from campus driving on the streets.

There is one called the plaza apartments across the street from school. They look decent but people in past years have said that it's a bad area to live in. I remember reading old posts and one guy who was living there said that his neighbor had just got shot so there was an opening next door. 😕

I would hope he was joking which he probably was, but that's just not something to joke about. I laughed when I saw it though because I took it as a joke. 👍

Hey Slickness,
I've been told NOT to live in Pomona, especially not in the neighborhoods around or south of the school...so I guess you can take that for what it's worth. As for the Starbucks, it's been built and is within walking distance from the school's campus. Just as a side note, there was a prostitue hanging out on the corner opposite of the Starbucks, at 4 in the afternoon!
Hmmm....good thing we'll have all those burly security guards to protect us!

 Maybe that's when business is good.

Yea most people say don't live in Pomona. I'm glad that starbucks is there now so we can have our caffeine highs before tests.

Hey COMP 2008,

Sorry I haven't been posting much. Some quick points:

1) Claremont is nice, but probably the most expensive of the places to live. Most people live in Chino/Chino Hills, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga - basically everywhere *around* Pomona.

2) Most places will emply a 2.5 x rent formula to figure out whether you qualify for their apartment. What they do is ask to see your award letter and what's left over after tuition, they check to see that that amount is at least 2.5 x one year's rent. Some places don't, so don't worry too much.

3) For those of you coming from out of state, be prepared to rent or buy a refrig - most places don't provide one.

4) Stay away from rental agencies - they will take your money and give you false, old, unavailable listings. The best way to find an apartment, surprisingly, is to drive/walk around an area that you like, and look for rental signs. Strange but true.

5) There's a Starbucks *and* a Quizzno's now.

Thanks tkim6599!!!

No refrigerators...I've never heard of such a thing???

depending on what part of Anaheim it'll take between 30-45 min. without traffic. Expect morning and afternoon traffic tho. I've heard othe med students living as far as long beach/hollywood...somehow they get by.

I just called the COMP office. They received my 2nd deposit so that's good. Also, I talked to a financial aid person and they said we can expect our reward letter in a couple of weeks if you filled out the FAFSA.

I would suggest living somewhere west of pomona. Traffic will flow west heading to downtown LA, afternoon traffic east. Living westward of pomona will give you a decent commute going against traffic...but sometimes i've seen both heavy east and west bound traffic.

hey guys,

i think i've pretty much made up my mind to go to comp! sending in my 2nd deposit in a couple of days. can't wait to join you guys...was having a hard time btw comp and tucom (b/c i'm from norcal) but comp is the better choice. reading what you guys have posted has been really helpful...thanks!
anyone looking for a roomie?
anyone bringing their dog? i'm debating whether or not to bring my little guy b/c i won't have much time for him but i'd hate to leave him w/ the rents...

Welcome risar. I think you made the right decision. Being from norcal, I'm sure it must have been a difficult one.

I'm glad our thread helped in your decision. 😀

hey ris!
i've been trying to decide that too...i have a little yorkie who i don't want to part with! but i'm not sure how i feel about leaving him alone for who knows how many hours!!! it was suggested to me that i wait and see how the first month is...if i have enough time at home and wouldn't be neglecting my pup, then i'll drive back to az to kidnap him from my parents!

Sorry to burst your bubble but it's 94 Degrees here in LA so you're not leaving the desert to find cooler weather that's for sure!

ellemarii,
hmm, maybe our dogs can be playmates? i have a 3 yr old pom...and he loves other dogs. interested? that way they won't have to be alone all day. or we could start a puppy play group! a lot of the vet students will prolly have dogs.

slick...
your posts discussing the "merits" of mare island were "especially" helpful. heehee. 😉

anyone get invited to isac ? i emailed dr. kuehn about it but i'm not sure if i'll be accepted b/c i haven't had anatomy yet.

has anyone gotten the roommate questionaire thingy yet? i'm kinda nervous about housing b/c i wanna take either sapp or isac

i'm in the san fernando valley

HEY I DIDN'T GET ANY HOUSING INFO!

DID ANYONE ELSE?

WHY DOES COMP TORTURE US LIKE THIS!?

Welcome to comp everyone..."why are they torturing us?" We still have 4 months before school starts...COMP still has quite a number of seats still open. I think maybe we're just a bit too eagered to get started.

Glad I could be of service. 🙂

Yea, COMP seems to like to take their time on a lot of things. I want to see what my financial aid will look like but it won't be out till a couple of weeks.

Maybe they're waiting till we turn in our immunization forms.

So did you send your deposit in or are you waiting for UCLA.

I don't think that I'm gonna hear back from UCLA or Drew for a while...so since I'm going out to Palm Springs this weekend...I talked to my COMP counselor Gloria who said that it was okay for me to drive over the 2nd deposit to her this Friday. So I'll be going to COMP this week...anything y'all want me to ask them, let me know!

Hey I use AIM too...screen name "Luwi25" so it's easy for y'all to IM me 😀
Don't forget to say hello when I'm signed on!

Cool. Gloria is my counselor too. Maybe you can ask her when exactly the immunizations are due and maybe when we should hear from financial aid.

I already did ask about financial aid but maybe they'll tell you something different.

according to the people I talked to at the financial aid office, we should be getting our award letters at the end of this week or next week....I can't wait to get it and see how much I'll be owing for the rest of my life 😉

When I talked to them today, the lady told me within a couple of weeks. So Dr. Don are you going to COMP for sure?

Not a problem Slick! I asked her about the immunization record thing and she said, just make sure to turn it in before we start school but to try to get it in as soon as you can. But she didn't stress a time limit and said just do em' when you can but just BEFORE August.

But I'll ask her again to be sure!

I'll let you all in on a little secret: during orientation, people who didn't have their immunizations all set were sent over to the clinic to get them. Don't know if there was a charge for them or not. So don't stress too much about getting them. But, don't blame me if they don't do it for your class. Heh.

Thanks. But I guess tkim answered the question for us. It looks like it's not that big of a deal then.
