I don't think you will. By your location I'm guessing you're from UC Berkeley. A person of your genius status should have no problem. 😉

i have to admit...i was one of the dumbest people in my class. too many asians there. they always seem break the curve and make me feel academically challenged. should've gone to riverside. 😉

 Yep here in Riverside it's pretty easy. Not that much competition and the averages are low which makes it easy to beat the curve.

Okay so get this my fellow COMPers...who here filled out a secondary prior to interviewing at COMP?

Well, I was over at COMP this afternoon turning in my $1k check to Gloria at admissions and there were 5 people there for an interview. So I guess they're still interviewing and there was this one interviewee that Gloria was talking to.

Basically he had not turned in his secondary and they still offered him an interview! She said that this year, a secondary did not have to be filled before an interview (they were overlooking that and still inviting for interviews)!

I worked darn hard on my long secondary for COMP so I was like "What the ****???!" :wow:

Are they that desperate on getting the class filled? Thoughts?

 Wow that's pretty bad. Maybe they are desperate for peeps. I don't think it matters though because it means more space for us.

hey guys,

regarding the whole dreaded secondary...i was one of those people who was called for an interview prior to completing a secondary. however, i busted my butt to get that thing turned in before going so that way i'd have a better shot at getting in since they'd have the whole picture (or at least the majority of it).

here's my take on this...they suggested i have it done prior. but there were some kids in my interview group who were like, "you have to fill out a secondary? i didn't have to fill out a secondary. i'm not gonna fill out a secondary." BUT they still require ALL the application materials to be in before they'll grant acceptance...so for those who didn't see it worth the effort to put the work into getting it done won't be getting an acceptance letter from comp any time soon.

but that's just my $ .02 😀

guys, you shouldn't be offended or feel bummed because some got interviews without filling it out yet because- guess what? you got into medical school! a good one too!

i would be happy if there's less people in our class, because just like slickness said, there will be more space for us, as well as more time with professors. let the people who are so easily scared off by the mention of scandal go to UCLA, UCI or Drew. Oh, wait...

that's funny; i read in the la times when the ucla story broke that western had similar shady dealings; they sold cadavers to OCC and were caught up in some sort of scandal

as far as the interview w/o secondary is concerned...shady

its all good i'm still set on western

it also said that after further investigation, no charges were ever brought up at western because the professor had all the necessary documents in order, and western wasn't mentioned in any other subsequent article like UCI was.

the big picture is that every institution has the potential for a scandal, even the more prestigious ones like UCLA. just like any company out there, a university can have bad people working for it that will commit fraud if they can get some extra cash. we rarely see companies or instiutions like enron or tyco, were it's widespread and severe, but i can bet that any company has someone stealing something or doing something improper for money.

what do you mean about "shady", folwer's? does anyone know if they've ever done it in years past?

I'm kind of on the fence about secondaries.

My experience with them is that it's a bunch of essays on topics that could already have been addressed in the AACOMAS personal statement. Also, a lot of the secondaries require you to *reenter* info that was submitted with the friggin primary, which simply drove me nuts.

My somewhat cynical view about secondaries is that's just a way of making some money off the applicants, ostensibly to cover the cost of processing the applications that roll in. But, the application to interview ratio being so high, the more secondaries that roll in - the more money you make.

Let's face it - if everyone who applies gets a secondary, then there's no pre-screening involved. And this happens more often than not.

I think it would refreshing if people were screened off the primary, and the personal statement is used as the personal insight into the applicant - as it was meant to be, and the interview is used to cover all the crap we normally would address in the secondary.

NYCOM does this - you only fill out the secondary when you are invited for interview. How refreshing!

Hey peeps,

I received a letter from Western confirming they received my deposit. They also talk about important dates including when the summer classes are. I guess tuition for next year will be 31K.

The white coat ceremony is Aug 7 and I think orientation starts Aug 4. I don't have the letter with me because it's at home but my mom read it to me over the phone.

Unfortunately, it says nothing about financial aid so I don't know when we will hear about that.

it (that same letter) says we need 31,000 bux by the time of registration but no where does it mention when we'll be getting our aid check!

anybody else freakin out about this?

i kinda forgot to store an extra 30 g's just in case

That sucks. I didn't know that. Hopefully they'll give us some aid by then but we register in August so I don't know if we'll get a check yet.

No worries.

When you apply for aid and receive your loans, they go directly to Western. Whatever is left after tuition and fees is refunded to you for living expenses. The first time, it's in the form of a check. The second time, it's electronically deposited to your checking account. Disbursements are during first and second semester.

Bottom line - you don't have to fork over 30 large.

Thanks tkim for that info.

 I heard it was a gay bar. What's up with a gay bar on campus? They could have at least made it a straight bar so we could go there after finals. :meanie:

That place gets rented out every year for the annual Western Halloween party.

Lots of Village People and Gloria Gaynor tunes.

"Young man ..."

supposedly Western has made the bar owner offers for the land but the bar won't budge

oh well

I believe we are all adults mature and open-minded enough. As long as you are not looking for anything more than having a few drinks, straight peeps can go to gay bars and gay peeps can go to straight bars.

But some might worry that " what if I get hit on?"
which I would personally find it to be a flattery but that scenario would be the same as if you get hit on by someone who you are not attracted to, regardless of the gender.

you just smile politely and say "sorry, not interested." 🙂 🙂 🙂

Good point! I personally take it as a compliment if a girl thinks I'm attractive because girls are generally more critical anyway and so it definitely would be flattering!

gotta love the gay bars. lots of hawt dudes to look at and none of them will bother me if i don't want them to. gay guys don't seem to bother straight guys much anyways- they've got the super sensitive gaydar.

Hello Everyone,

I interviewed at COMP fairly recently (02/27) and I recieved my acceptance last week. Yes I did have to complete my secondary before...

I have enjoyed reading all your posts although I am still unsure about some things at WesternU. Some of you raise some great questions and concerns that I was unaware of. So it was nice to hear that others are doing good research that I should have been doing. However I will likely send my deposit this week. I was also accepted at DMU and I am supposed to interview at Touro next week but I haven't heard ANY positive things about that school other than the few that had good interivew experiences and posted them on this site. I may not even attend the interview(still debating). However I'm in Nor Cal so the ocation is good.

Anway of those of you that have committed themselves to COMP are you currently looking for housing? I put an ad on Roomates.com but I didn't get very many matches for the areas the school suggested. If you guys have any tips please let me know.

Thanks!!

Hey kdances, welcome to the class. I would say nix on the TUCOM interview but then again you are from Sacramento so you may want to look into it.

I'm probably going to COMP myself. As for housing, it has been talked about a lot. In a letter that COMP just sent to me, it says that in June they will give papers that you can fill out for roommate compatibility.

I just received an email from Western stating we can only bring 2 guests to the white coat ceremony!!!

HOW THE HELL ARE WE GONNA BRING PARENTS + SIGNIFICANT OTHER!?

not to mention my mom invited both grandparents and my sister wants to come too!!!

oh man!
:wow: :wow: :wow:

I didn't get that email. Where's my email. 🙁

Two guests only? Wow that sucks.

2 guests only? What the eff is that about?!

Bare minimum there are 3 people in my life I'd like to be there. Who do I say "sorry, you can't come" to?
-sweet old grandma who probably won't live to see me graduate
-honorable husband about to sacrifice more than he realizes
-supportive father living vicariously through his daughter's medical career

What a "sophie's choice" moment.

I can understand less than say 10 people, but 2? That's cruel.

 I particularly like the father comment. So what exactly happens at the white coat ceremony. Is it a dinner? Also, are they just going to announce our names and give us a white coat?

white coat ceremony? mmm..didn't get any info on that. doubt i'll invite anyone...is it suppose to be a big deal?🙄

congrats kdances!!

yeah, he cried when i told him i got in. he would have made a great doc if he'd had the self-confidence to apply.

as far as i know, the white coat ceremony is where you go up on stage and a loved one or special person in your life puts a white coat on you, signifying the beginning of your journey to being a doctor. very symbolic, and thus why familes go nuts for it.

I emailed the admissions office about this even though we have awhile. Debbie said that the venue is small that's why they would like everyone to only invite parents plus one person. If we absolutely need 4 we need to notify the school. It will be funny if they get a flood of emails about this now...Class of 2008 already causing drama!

Sounds nice. I didn't know it was a family member that put the coat on.

sweet. thanks for the info and welcome to our class. i wonder if it would be too early to ask for four places.

actually, now that i read the description on the letter, it says "compatriots", so maybe it's other students from our class or the class ahead of us. hmmm.

what's weird is i just saw the name of a girl i went to high school with on the bookstore raffle e-mail, and i wonder if she's in the program. she always wanted to be a doctor. how cool is that?

i also figured out how to configure the POP3 server to get my e-mails sent directly to my hiptop. that is sweeeet...

Last year they held the white coat ceremonies at the Claremont Colleges. Separate auditoriums for each program.

The place *does* get packed. I'd ask around amongst your classmates if they have an extra one they won't be using.

I received another letter from COMP today. This time it said that the physical forms are due by April 1st or as soon as possible. What is that supposed to mean? 😕

From what everyone said, it seems like they just need to be done before registration but why would they include the date April 1.

hey guys just wanted to let you know that Banweb is finally up and running, there is no financial aid stuff there yet, but if you guys want to check it out, it's working now....hopefully they'll have our fin aid awards up there soon.....

What's banweb? If you're talking about our email accounts, we have had access for awhile and there hasn't been anything about fin aid besides reminding us to apply. Is that what you're talking about?

it's suppose to be an interactive webpage where we can check the status of our financial aid, change personal info, etc.

In your acceptance letter you should have received an user ID and password to log in. Try it.
Oh I see. Yea I logged in. Thanks for the info.

I have 4 holds on my account and have no info on financial aid yet.
