I'm in the application process now and the two schools I like the most are COMP and NOVA. I've been to COMP and yes it's a strip mall, but the students seem so happy and the inside of the buildings are nice. Haven't been to NOVA. For all you lucky future D.O.'s attending either school, what do you like the most and the least about your school. If you could do it all over again would you pick the same school?

since my time surfing here, ive seen many threads on both schools concerning pros and cons.

i dont know if the search is working or not, but im sure you can scroll through the pages and find many answers on your q.

Well, I can't say much for COMP but I can give you my opinion of NOVA. NOVA is a great medical school. One pro is the location. There are only 2 medical schools serving the South Florida area...University of Miami and NOVA. Therefore, you get tons of opportunity to train at some of South Florida's finest hospitals. Third and Fourth years are excellent in terms of clerkships. As for the student body, they are great. There is always someone backing you up. I chose NOVA because of it's pro-student environment. Administration and faculty non stop try to make everything in the favor of the students. Very pro active. The downside is the cost. Like many others of my fellow NOVA classmates, we are dropping at least 150K in debt. I think the education is worth it. I turned down 3 in state med schools to come to Nova. Hope this helps.

Well, I got waitlisted at NOVA, and accepted to COMP. But had both schools accepted me, it would have been hard to decide.

Nova's facilities are *excellent* - wireless internet in the lecture halls, a super-huge library that you can *sign out* a laptop to surf wirelessly while there. The list goes on.

For personal reasons, though, I would still go to COMP, since my side of the family lives in Hawaii, and I wanted to be closer to them.

I tell you, take a look at NOVA if you get a chance. I don't thinkyou'd go wrong anywhere you go - make it the best fit for you.

I didnt' get an interview offer at COMP (wow, five years ago), but instead attended NSUCOM.

If you are from the East Coast, I would suggest NSUCOM. Especially fi you're from the southeast.

We get decent mathces at residency (as do all schools), so don't let that be a part of your decision.

What shoudl eb part of your decision is:

A) Where do you DEFINATELY want to live for two years? Ft. Lauderdale/Miami or California (Pomona? I don't know).

B) Where do you LIKELY want to do your third year core rotations (COMP, CA? Or FL?)

Tuition is likely the same so that's not that big a deal.

Both schools have thier political BS so who cares. Its really (as a recent medical school grad and soon to be resident) down to where you want to live for atleast two years (and possibly 4).

Good luck!

Q, DO

I'm really leaning towards south florida..this is all speculative seeing how I haven't even submitted. But I've lived in CA long enough and think the sunshine state would suit me well. With the exception of hanging chads and the elian gonzales fiasco, I can't think of anything bad I've heard about florida. Nova strikes me as a really good school and from the posts I've read on this forum the students like to relax and have fun. It's going to be my number 1 school.

having seen both schools i'd have to say nova wins in terms of facilities and environment. both have strong academics though. nsu is making a lot of advances with in terms of postgraduate training which i don't know if many people know about. next year, we'll be starting a comined d.o./dmd program, two sport med fellowships, the first osteopathic forensic pathology fellowship in conjunction with broward county coroner and a correctional medicine fellowship with the florida corrections department. in addition this year we have a new peds residency at west palm beach which further bolsters our training programs.

in the end though choosing a med school should be based on where you feel most comfortable and also where you feel you will excel the most.

MOZ D.O.

I've been to both school and was accepted to both schools. Like my future classmate Dr.Doogie, I chose NOVA based on similar qualities aforementioned. I also declined two in-state schools(one MD and one DO) here in Illinois to go to Nova. Its got a great reputation in Florida as well as with residency directors(people have gone to Yale, Mayo, other top notch residency programs). I chose it because of the facilities(one of few DO & MD programs to have "Harvey"-cardiac pathology simulator)...wireless internet....you can check out wireless laptops at the library...beautiful campus...awesome curriculum(very integrated...in fact, NSUCOM won an AMSA award for its integrated curriculum...an award given to Harvard, Mt. Sinai, and other top notch medical schools in previous years)...loved the rotation sites(some of the nations top hospitals- I.E. Palmetto general)..and ofcourse the friendly students and faculty make the education there so warming and great! I'm sure you'd do well at either campus...both schools, I'm sure offer comparable educations...but it should come down to where u want to live and how it fits your interests in what you want in a medical school.

Good luck with everything,

Mani
NSUCOM Class of 2007

Nova has a great reputation all around. You guys are lucky to be there and the fact that busy med students would take the time to answer questions says a lot. I was a grad student at an allo school in texas and you would be lucky to get someone to stop and give you directions to the bathroom. In additon, any school that would let in a girl like Quinn has got to shoot to the top of any guys list. :hardy:

Who would be the best person to contact in the admissions department if I have a question or two?

No problemo...

You can contact Lynne Cawley - Associate Director of Admissions and Student Affairs

her number is 954-262-1113 or 800-356-0026, ext. 1113

Good Luck!

Nater, you ever watch the movie 'The Crying Game'? 😉

ha ha ha...I don't know if ya'll know this but Quinn is not female, he is a male.

This is worse than finding out santa clause doesn't exist

:wow:

Thanks for the admin contact Cash...I'm going to go crawl up into the fetal position for awhile. I'll talk to you GUYS later.

I don't think Lynne Cawley is with the COM any longer. However, those numbers should still work and I'm sure someone will be there that can answer your Q's.

Although I'm biased, I was also accepted to COMP and would choose NOVA without thinking twice. COMP and NOVA are great schools and if you're accepted to either you're golden.

Good luck!

I knew girls like that in medical schools don't exist.

It's not true. I know there was a girl at COMP, class of 2001, who was a 11 from a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best. WOW! she was dynamite. Everywhere she went, she turned eyes of men around. She is doing a radiology residency at an allo program in Florida. She was NOT a dumb broad. She was smart and absolutely charming.

Slickness, if you did not know, you should know by now. California is beauty galore, and COMP is full of it. If you are good and lucky enough to be accepted by COMP and decide to attend there, you better keep your head straight, b/c the distraction is overwhelming.

Good luck to you wherever you go to med school. I would not rule out COMP if I were you. Just remember, COMP does not accept everyone, and COMP is not for everyone.

Quinn, before I knew the truth...You had me at hello....What's the average GPA and mcat score at NOVA? Also, I just wrapped up my personal statement but think it may be a little too corny. Will one of you take a quick look at it and tell me what you think? I was honest about why I want to be a DO and talked about what led me to the profession. This thread is COMP vs NOVA....Where are all the COMP posts? Hmmm...

Yeah if you want, you can cut and paste your personal statement in a PM and send it to me. I'll have to read it before this Sat as I'm going to Jamaica for a week.

As far as hotties, NSUCOM has THE hottest people. Remember the location. Ft. Lauderdale/Miami. Miami is full of tons and tons of exotic hotties... you've got the Cubans, the Columbians (my personal fave), Brazillians, tons and tons of Europeans (French, German, Spanish, and Italians especially), not to mention a lot of half-breeds (like myself). Seriously, I had never seen such a group of hot looking STUDENTS before in my life (and I went to a college ranked #2 by Playboy for hottest girls on campus).

California may have hot people walking around, but NSUCOM has them IN YOUR CLASSES.

Q, DO

I'm glad this thread is sticking to COMP vs NOVA debate.

Thanks Quinn I really appreciate it. I'll PM it first thing in the morning. Brutal honesty will be gratefully appreciated.

GoForIt, I was at a bar in Newport Beach last saturday and I really can't imagine any place having more talent per square inch. But if quinn is right the hotties are in class with you...now that's distracting. How do girls react when you tell them you're going to be doctors? I'm sure you don't use it as a pick up line, but it has to come up sooner or later.

Nater44,

As you might already know, there are plenty of "gold diggers" in California. Smart people do not use "doctors" as a pick up line. You avoid revealing your profession if all necessary. You want someone to like you for what you are, not because of the money you'll be making. The great thing about COMP is there are beauty and hottie galore on campus. They may be attending different schools such as PharmD, PA, PT, Nursing, Vet etc. and they know who you are. I know quite a few COMP students met their spouses there at COMP.

You just cannot knock COMP. It is a great school in California.

I guess that's what I was eluding too. Living in CA and dating these past few months has shown me that the ladies out here are very interested in money. Having just moved from Texas where they're more interested in whether or not you drive a 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive, the materialism has been a big turnoff. I work for a huge biotech that's well known in the area...I told this girl where I worked and she actually looked up the stock price of the company! This chick was doing a financial background check on me! Looks will get your foot in the door, but the bottom line will dictate if anything goes further.

My friend is a second year at Nova and men just dig her. She's an indian beauty.😀

thought i'd give my thoughts --

i applied to both COMP and NOVA. NOVA lost my DO letter and after telling them that i couldn't replace it (doc moved away) they pretty much told me i was screwed. i had plenty of other letters of rec (an MD one too)... but the admissions office was not very helpful... anyways, so i basically gave up on NOVA. six months later they invite me to interview.... crazy, right?? i ended up turning down the invite b/c i was already accepted at COMP.

COMP sent me an email inviting me to interview... but i never got it! it just so happened that i called to check my status and things got straightened out... i interviewed in january, had an awesome interview group and interviewer... was accepted... and am going!

i am from Tampa, FL and know tons of doctors who were trained at NOVA. it's a great school and looking at the brochure, the facilities look incredible! people say great things about it... and i hear the students love it! personally, i don't want to live in florida nor do i want to match in florida. if NOVA was somewhere else... i'd probably reconsider b/c their campus is awesome!

COMP's campus isn't anything to write home about. it is an old strip mall and pomona isn't too exciting... but i really liked the people i got to meet and enjoyed my visit regardless. i also wanted to check out the west coast. i grew up in florida, i went to college in atlanta, georgia and moved to boston for grad school and work. i'm itchy for a new environment and my cali friends always rave about it --- so i decided to go to COMP and will be checking out this wonderland everybody's been talking about.

bottom line, both schools are solid. basically it's whether or not you want to be kickin' it in Florida or California...

i was also accepted to Touro, UHS, and UNE in case anybody had questions about those schools....

hope this helps you out in your application process! jess
