Hello All !

1. What is a good number of hours for shadowing to be competitive (I have two DO physicians that I am shadowing right now: one in primary care and one in non-primary care).

2. Are 25-30 hours in each specialty or in another way 50-60 hours total be enough? Currently, I do have around 40 hours across the two specialties. I plan to get up to around 60 hours and stop.

Any input would be appreciated and thank you!

Yes. That’s plenty. Make sure you get at least one letter between them.

In my experience, 60-80 hours of shadowing is considered very competitive with many successful applicants being in the range of 30-40 hours.

With your current plan, I think that you'll be golden on that front.

I am currently getting one LOR from one of them. the other one i just started shadowing so I will ask soon. Thank you for the insight!

EDIT: would it be weird if I only got one LOR from one of the two? The one im getting from is the primary care physician. I'm not sure if the non-primary care is willing to write me one or not but so far the non-prim one seems chill.

Thank you for your advice! I did not know that 30-40 was around what successful applicants have. I will try to aim for 60 hours and then i might continue if my schedule is free and I have nothing else to do.

I actually had zero 😉

Not that I recommend that, of course...

Not weird, 1 is fine, and it’s good that you’re getting it from the primary care one.
