Completing a few Credits at another University

Hi guys,

I would like to know if dental schools in the US actually take into consideration which universities you graduate from or take credits from in the summer?

I'm a Canadian and studying at University of Toronto. I was thinking of taking a few courses (pre-requisites like physics and english) at York University instead b/c it's closer to my workplace in the summer.


I hope someone who knows the US application system well can shed some light about this topic. I do not wish to be at a disadvantage at a shot at my dream of being a dentist.

i think that sounds fine. im planning on doing something similar. i graduated now, and will be taking next semester at a local 4 year college, thats a bit easier than my current college. I will be taking physics 2 and some upper level bios

Thanks for the reply! Good to know someone is in a similar situation as me. Are you taking these courses to boost your GPA? Or you'll have to complete them in order to fulfill some pre-requisites?

Also, I was wondering if the interviewers actually scrutinize these courses and demand a proper explanation on why I actually chose to take these "pre-requisites" at another seemingly easier university? Other than the fact that York is closer to my workplace and home..

You'll be fine as long as your coursework is completed at a credible school.

im taking them to boost my science gpa, and to fulfill the physics 2 requirement. its an easier school, so why not. the main idea is it does not really matter where you take these courses, all that matters is your g.p.a

Not necessarily! A 4.0 GPA from some unknown community college isn't better than a 3.5 GPA from a prestigious school. Also the level of classes you've taken to obtain the GPA that you have matters. A 4.0 GPA that's obtained by taking some cheesy classes isn't better than a 3.5 GPA that's obtained by taking hardcore science courses and these are things that adcoms will notice!

sorry i did not clarify. as long as its a 4-year college, and you are taking legit classes. I am planning to take few upper level bios and physics 2. I am planning to graduate from my fairly competitive state school to go to a fairly easier state school( suny farmingdale).

Are you able to provide some sources to perhaps back this up?

I know canadian dental schools do not care at all what courses you took and from which universities/colleges you took these courses from.

I'm intending to do a double major in chemistry and economics and I hope taking economics will not have any negative impact on my application to Dental schools..

York is still a 4-year university, not like its some community college, and since most of your other prereqs will be/were taken at UofT, you should be fine. Won't matter at all. Plus I hear physics at UofT is killer...

so heres the important question...is it better to get an A in a random, not very competitive 4 year uni, or a B/B+ in a known competitive 4 year uni? I am choosing the A in the random school, but am curious about what others think about this.

Yeah I believe this is what the Canadian System is all about. But I too am unsure about the US system hence the purpose of this thread 🙂

Thanks! Yeah you're right many people's perfect scores get destroyed by physics 🙄 By any chance are you canadian? I find it difficult to believe the news of the infamous physics @ UofT is capable of spreading across the border 😛
