I was wondering as to how I would get the percent composition of O in a hydrate i.e. What is the percent composition of O in C2H6 * 5H2O? I made up the formula I know that this is called a hydrate.

So the way I would go about doing this is:

mass of O/mass of whole hydrate *100

80/110 *100 = 73%

Is this right?

No, the mass of the entire hydrate is 120. Therefore its 80/120

66.67%

the total mass is 120 so you just divide 80 which is the mass of five O by 120 and you get 66.6% just like klutzy said.
