Hi guys, so I scored a 26M on my MCAT (6 on verbal) with English being my second language. What should I do next? AACOMAS has already verified my application. I am thinking about contacting the schools I am applying, and just explain the low verbal score and hope that they will take it into their consideration when evaluating my primary application. I feel like I will be able to convince them during interviews that I can handle the curriculum in medical school, but I am afraid that they won't even give me an interview by just looking at my verbal score. I have a 3.5 gpa from a hard undergrad.

Let me know if I should contact the school, and if I do, how should I approach them.

Thanks

I would go ahead and contact a couple of schools you are interested in to see if they will even look at your application.

Sadly, a 6 in verbal is going to be a roadblock for a lot of schools, even DO.

While you are a non-native speaker; with the 6 and a low writing score, you are going to have to work hard to convince them you have a strong enough knowledge of English to succeed in medicine.

Sorry

Don't jump the gun just yet. Wait until you start receiving secondaries... it might not be a big deal, especially if you listed english as your second language and you managed to do well in your college coursework (3.5 is pretty good).

They may let the 6 slide if they have a 7 minimum cut-off. I know it's been done before. If you get screened out of the secondary, THEN you should contact them and plead your case.

I figured they would at least cut me some slacks considering that I got a 12 on PS and 8 on BS. It's not that I can't read......

Well, verbal is "designed" to test your ability to think quickly and critically while staying strictly within the text. It's not really designed to see if you can read english... since you probably wouldn't have passed general bio 1 if you couldn't. That's why some people are either really good at it, and some suck at it (I got a 7 in VR, so I'm part of the latter group lol).

I have gotten all As in my English courses at school, so hopefully they will pay attention to that......

Relax your fine. Plenty people get in with a 6 in verbal. Some schools don't even look at verbal. I wouldn't contact any schools.

Hey I have the same issue I scored a 27M on my MCAT with a 6 on VR although for me English is not my second language. I know KCUMB has 7 as their cutoff, should I call them and see if they would let my 6 on VR slide?

Someone with a 6 was just accepted this past cycle. Don't think you have to call.

You're fine...it might lead to an interview question about it, but quit fussing and start applying.

I got a 6 in verbal but was already invited for 3 interviews. As long as everything else is strong you should be able to get interviews, but prepare to explain why you got that score (my first interview saved this question for last). good luck

May I ask how did you go about explaining this? In my case I'm really worried because English is my first language...

Just be honest as to why you got it without blaming it on stupid things. I wasn't fully prepared and I got caught up on a few questions that really killed my time so that's why I didn't do well. I did great on the science sections and do well in all my classes so I tried to highlight that instead.

stop worrying my child!

I too have a 26M with 6 in verbal (GPA is 3.8). last cycle I got 4 interviews: 1 rejection (kcumb), 2 waitlisted (azcom and western), 1 deferred acceptance (touroNY). I don't believe my rejections were due to my verbal score. I applied very late, I almost interviewed for WL spots. and had no DO shadowing exp.

This year, I also got into MSU.

So don't worry. make sure you proofread your essay many times.

Good luck 👍
