Some of us who have failed this exam are justified to think it has gotten more difficult in recent times. Now there's actual proof that the exam failure rate is a nationwide problem. Hopefully this will be resolved soon for everyone's sake!!

This came from ASDA:

ASDA's Response to Concerns Regarding Failure Rate for NBDE II

Dear ASDA Member,
It has come to the attention of the Board of Trustees that the national rate of failure on the NDBE Part II has increased significantly over the past few months. The Board is currently taking action to build concrete evidence of this change. We are requesting support from the Deans, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the American Dental Association (ADA) to ensure that the exam is fair to all students and secure.
The Joint Commission that facilitates the exam has identified that this increase affects dental students nationwide. However, statistical data has not yet been compiled that illustrates the severity of the failure rate. We will begin discussions with all interested parties, including dental school Deans, ADEA, the ADA, the Joint Commission and other student dental groups. We hope to come to a resolution as soon as possible that is in the best interest of students and the profession.
Sincerely,

do u think anything will be done to help the students who have already received their scores and failed? i haven't received mine yet (should come this week) but most of my fellow classmates have failed and it's not looking too great for me either. i can't imagine not graduating due to part II - this type of increase in failure rate has not happened before and it's horrible that it's happening with the 2010 class 😡

I did decks, mosby's, and kaplans... plus the most recent 4 old test. Decks is really in depth, with alot of things that I were more complex than the boards. Mosby's i thought was really good. Kaplans was decent I mainly used it for studying the day before the test and between day 1 and day 2. I was getting around 85-88 on the old test and my score for part II was an 89. So i good pretty similar results. I had alot of repeat endo questions. Pharm was fairly easy, mainly alot of basic questions, nothing as in depth as decks. I thought the most difficult sections was the case presentation the second day b/c the x-rays were of suck poor quality and the questions were vague. If there is anything I can do to answer anymore questions just.

hey thanx a lot.. i think now i will again do it once more keenly and see wat happens.. thanx a lot ukdent once again.

I find this increase in failure rate a little odd. Is it due to the difficulty in questions or changes made in testing?

I am glad that ASDA is taking notice and doing something about this. However, I highly doubt that anything of use will happen for us 2010ers.

All I have to say is taking this test once is 300 bucks down the drain, plus hours of studying irrelevant testing materials. Taking it twice? Then 3 times? National Joint Commission must be making a ton during this economic crisis.

I thought the SAME thing as you. Each time you re-test you pay something like $345-$365, so it's nice little extra cash coming into the Joint Commission's hands. I am a great example actually, I re-tested 3 times, so the Joint Commision made over a thousand just from me!! I also agree w/you that it's doubful there will be anything done w/the 2010 class unfortunately.

I bet that NOTHING will be done to help those who have failed the test already. Hopefully the joint commission can soon correct whatever they screwed up so that re-takers don't end up failing again!!

Im taking it in 4 weeks and Im FREAKING out! 😱

May the ghost of Pierre Fauchard , Black, and Saint Apollonia help us all!

I am glad to see I'm not the only one who has spent endless months studying to receive a score of a 74! I feel frustrated and confused as to the next step. What is frustrating is how long is this investigation going to last for? I called the Joint commissioners office today and they said it will end "soon". Well, what does soon mean? ANY ADVICE OUT THERE as to would you just re take it again in 3 months OR wait for this to be resolved? My concern is for those of us going into residency come July 1st, what happens if we still haven't passed this dam exam yet?? ahhhh I want to screammm I'm so mad @ this. Why do we have to be the lucky ones to take this exam during "investigation" times. 😡

What happens with your residency if you do not pass Pt 2? Do they kick you out? This is stressful!

Well, I guess that depends. I may be wrong, but my understanding is you can't attend a residency if you don't have your DMD/DDS awarded by your school. Some schools don't allow you to graduate until you have passed boards 2, others grant you a degree w/out boards 2. Those who won't get a diploma because they can't pass the test will lose out on the residency spot but those who can graduate w/out boards 2 won't have to worry about their spot BUT won't be able to get licensing w/out passing this test. Again, this is my understanding and I may be wrong.

Wow, that's such a tough call, wait or not wait. I would HOPE that by the time you have to re-test (let's say around March/April/May timeframe) the investigation will have been resolved and the solution would be to have the test back to the way it was before all this non-sense ?s were introduced. I agree w/a previous poster that I don't think anyone's status will change from fail to pass, but hopefully the test will go back to normal, when they used to ask normal basic ?s so when you re-test the real score of pass will finally happen. Keep trucking guys and don't lose confidence!!

Scary to have to admit that you as an incoming resident failed the boards! If you have the guts to do it, then by all means! Does your school grant a degree w/o boards 2? Most ppl still have a chance to pass before starting their programs as most of them start in the June/July timeframe. Just give it your BEST and hope that this whole thing gets resolved by the time you have to take it again.
