When I was sworn into the Army on Friday, my recruiter told me that you cannot pay off your dental school obligation and residency obligation at the same time. However, I have read in SDN that you can pay off your obligations concurrently.
Let's say I were to do a 3-year residency program after dental school... once that residency is up I thought I would owe only 4 years active duty and 1 year in the reserve (since the contract is 4 years ADO and 4 years IRR). I thought I could be paying off my dental school payback obligation and residency payback obligation at the same time and the residency program counts towards my 4 years IRR. After the 3 year residency program I would count towards 3 of the 4 years required in IRR. So I would only have 4 years ADO and 1 year IRR after I finished the residency. However, my recruiter told me that the residency payback obligation would be stacked onto my dental school obligation. So in this example I would owe 7 years active duty after my residency (4 for DS + 3 for residency) instead of being able to pay them off at the same time.
So can any of you who have gone through this process or know the facts tell me if you can payback your dental school obligation and residency obligation at the same time or if the residency adds on to your AD obligation? Thanks for the help.
