When I was sworn into the Army on Friday, my recruiter told me that you cannot pay off your dental school obligation and residency obligation at the same time. However, I have read in SDN that you can pay off your obligations concurrently.

Let's say I were to do a 3-year residency program after dental school... once that residency is up I thought I would owe only 4 years active duty and 1 year in the reserve (since the contract is 4 years ADO and 4 years IRR). I thought I could be paying off my dental school payback obligation and residency payback obligation at the same time and the residency program counts towards my 4 years IRR. After the 3 year residency program I would count towards 3 of the 4 years required in IRR. So I would only have 4 years ADO and 1 year IRR after I finished the residency. However, my recruiter told me that the residency payback obligation would be stacked onto my dental school obligation. So in this example I would owe 7 years active duty after my residency (4 for DS + 3 for residency) instead of being able to pay them off at the same time.

So can any of you who have gone through this process or know the facts tell me if you can payback your dental school obligation and residency obligation at the same time or if the residency adds on to your AD obligation? Thanks for the help.

The key point is whether you do the residency at a military training facility or a civilian training facility. Military training payback is concurrent. Civilian is consecutive.

When did you apply N was it for hsps? When did you hear your response? What branch?

Thanks for your response. That's what I have read. Have you done the HPSP program and did you do a residency program in the military?

HPSP payback is concurrent with residency payback. So here is how your example would work out:

1) You apply Oct/Nov senior year of dental school for your specialty program (let's say perio).
2) You are selected and find out the results Dec/Jan of your senior year what you got picked up for and what location. That class you will start with will be 18 months from now (1 yr following graduation - unless you have already completed OBLC AND their is an open slot from the previous years boards)
3) You graduate dental school and go to OBLC. In September you go to the base where your residency program will be. You begin working as a general dentist for the fist year until your program begins the following summer. You just paid back your first year obligation of HPSP.
4) The next 3 years in your specialty program are neutral and do not count as any payback.
5) You are now beginning year #5 in the Army. The next 3 years you will simultaneously payback both the obligation for Perio and the remaining 3 years of HPSP.
6) All active duty obligations are done at the completion of your 7th year.
7) If you choose to get out you will have 1 yr remaining of IRR (no Army dentist has ever been activated from that). If you decide to stay in your salary will increase by at least $50k/year if you choose to do another 4 yrs.

The Army usually does not allow people to apply for their own specialty programs at civilian programs unless they are ones that they have already arranged (Pedo and Public Health).

hey.. when did you apply for hpsp?

hey.. when did you apply for hpsp?

I was doing the Air Force and Navy starting in September/October but the AF recruiter was horrible and the Navy didn't give me a medical waiver for my clavicle.

I had my orthopaedic surgeon write a letter on my condition when I applied for the Army saying I had no restrictions so the Army gave me my waiver.

I didn't apply to the Army till around New Year's but since they're a much larger branch they still had scholarships left. After getting to know all 3 branches I'm really happy that I ended up with the Army. I can elaborate on my reasons why if you'd like. But I got all my paperwork done in about 2 weeks but had to wait for my waiver. I didn't get it until February and then my file was reviewed by the February Review Board. I was accepted around at the end of February but had to wait for my SCROLL (senate approval). SCROLL took 2 months to come back and then last week when it finally came through is when I commissioned.

Thank you for your response. I didn't get the four year because it was too full - just like what you said. My recruiter said that I will be going on for the October 2011 board now. If I get accepted, I will probably get the 3.5 year scholarship. What do you think my chances are and what are your views about that? Should I sign the 20k commitment paper and serve 4 years? I want to specialize in either pros or ortho. Please let me know your thoughts and thank you for taking the time to help me with my journey.
