I'm really confused about what I should do here. In my freshman year I was given a citation for violating the school's alcohol conduct policy. Before submitting my AMCAS application, I wrote my dean and requested to know if this was considered an institutional action. She indicated that it was not and that my record was clear (in a letter that I now have).

Well, U of M's secondary application asks if you've ever been subject to any conduct violation.

Here is my uncertainty. I would want to reveal that I had been subject to an alcohol violation and make it clear that this was not seen as an institutional action by my school. However, I'm worried that they might report an irregularity with my AMCAS application (contrary to what my dean said), and that this might blow up in my face.

I'm considering not even finishing the secondary. I'm thinking better safe than sorry, and U of M is not my first choice.

Can they report such an "irregularity?"

Argghh. Why can't schools just let this crap be? I like the idea of South Beach, but I really don't wanna get screwed over for being honest and by having some place second guess my own school over what is an institutional aciton.

you wont be screwed over being honest. report it. im in a similar situation with criminal charges that I had that were eventually dropped. you just have to let them know, and most likely it wont be a big deal. they might ask you what you learned from the experience, but under no means lie. an alcohol situation most likely wont be frowned upon like a crime of moral terpitude. ive stressed out about the charges i had. now, i realize that sometimes **** happens. i wouldnt be surprised if somebody on the adcom who reads through your app experienced a similar situation. its not like miami is loma linda. dont stress out too much.

don't report it, why bother. Who cares? They don't have a team of investigators searching you out. Shoot, our government can't caputure any number of wanted people and you're worried about adcoms. If they were so good we'd have them working in intelligence.

Let it go. It's not a big deal. All of us got drunk, partied, had fun in college. You didn't cheat or something like that.

which U of M?

i guess if its through your school and the dean says that it is not considered an institutional action, then you dont have to report. i was answering from the point of you of there being an actual police report concerning the matter. prob wont be a big deal either way.

FYI - Do a search for institutional action, or policy violation, etc., and you should find numerous threads on this exact subject.

damn i wish they weren't so good at my school, now i have this big headache of an issue to deal with before i can matriculate......

If the Dean says no, then don't report it. Get the opinion of your premed committee to make sure.

You have a letter from the dean that it is not considered to be on your record. Forget about it. If they somehow do find out, which is highly doubtful. Only way they would find out, if your dean went out of his way to report you. But do you think that they actually go and call up every school and second guess every application. Hell no. The only time I would worry if there was some red flag where they would wannn find out more about you and call your school. Otherwise do not report anything. Forget about it. Best of luck.
