My parents always beg me to take my dogs for "gma and gpa weekend" at their house ever since I moved out.


They've been bad the past few weeks and I keep making excuses because it kills me when they're gone....I feel like a mother dropping their kid off at pre-k for the first time every time. I know they will take great care of them and the dogs love it but I just worry the whole time.


I must be crazy.
 
I've recently found myself wondering if PMS makes me hate people or if its actually a week of complete clarity.

So my SO absolutely LOVED the Wreck-it Ralph movie. So here I am thinking, that will be a perfect V-Day gift! Finally went through the trouble of looking it up and it's not out on DVD/BR until March 5...

Now I also have no idea what to get for him. The gift I got last year totally bombed (pretty sure it's still in the box on his dresser - a digital picture frame), and now I'm just at a loss.

Anyone have any ideas?

I thought we weren't going to do anything because I'll be flying back from my interview at PEI on that day and won't see him until the 16th. But then he made it clear that he felt obligated to do something special when I get back since we'll be missing both Valentine's and my birthday while I'm gone. So now I need to come up with a great gift. And unfortunately it's too late to go with my original idea because it takes at least 3 weeks to ship.

I'm stuck.

My SO and I don't do Valentine's day (or birthday) gifts. Lately I've just gotten him a bag of sweetheart candies that he loves. This year I bought him a bad of chocolate covered almonds at the bulk store up here.


...and have been eating through them since Superbowl Sunday. Oops.

Hmmmm. I dunno. I don't really do the Valentine's thing. Maybe make him dinner with his favorite dessert and give him a massage?

He does have some hobbies - the biggest problem is that whenever he wants something related to them, he just buys it for himself! A few of my X-mas presents for him were returned because of this... The other problem is that when I go shopping for some of his hobbies, I end up buying things for myself that I don't really need 🙄

I'll just have to try to come up with something!

Anything that he's said he wants to try (food, any activity-game/sports etc, see a play) that he wouldn't get for himself?

These are the ones I just fail at! Every once in awhile he'll mention something new, and I'll try to make a mental note of what it is, and eventually forget what it was.

Either that or I'll go for it and it'll sit in the box collecting dust for over a year 😛

Right now I'm thinking I might do some "coupon" type things - for cleaning his house (he lives with a male roommate, 1 dog, usually 1 foster dog, and 2 cats and it can get FILTHY), cooking food, etc. Not sure if it just seems like I'm taking the cheap way out though - especially since I occasionally do these things anyway...

getting gifts is always hard, in my opinion. But especially for valentine's day! I've only been in a relationship during valentines and it was very complicated at the time. I could never figure out what to get him, so I just didn't get him anything 🙄 I don't really have any advice, I just wanted to commiserate :laugh:

I've decided guys should get pinterest accounts. would be super helpful!
 
My last SO and I didn't really do valentines day, we usually just made nice dinner and ate together. Usually I used it as an excuse to get sexy times clothes and then make use of them :naughty:.
 
Seriously! It's an entire holiday devoted to sappy pink hearts and flowers. WTF are you supposed to get a guy during an explosion of romantic female sap?

I'll probably do some variation of what Abney suggested and take him to a nice dinner and maybe get him something simple but practical. Still, I'd be perfectly happy if we just ignored the pink holiday altogether. :laugh:

👍 YES. Guys are so hard to shop for.

Confession: I tend to get super sappy for Valentine's. Year before last I drew 13 valentines based on a webcomic we both read and gave him one each day leading up to the 14th and then a watch (in a box I'd decorated in theme) when we went out to dinner. Last year I wrote him a sonnet 😳 and stuck it on magnets and gave one line every day, plus a hat on the 14th. This year I'm gone a lot on the days leading up to Valentine's, so I'm not doing a one-every-day thing, but I wrote him another poem (an ottiva rima...I wanted to do a sestina because I love sestinas, but it just didn't work) and am planning to bake him heart-shaped oatmeal raisin cookies. I don't like oatmeal raisin, but they're one of his favorites, which in my mind makes it perfect.

Confession on the valentines gifts... I've never had a boyfriend over Valentines day. I just realized, I have dumped every one of them sometime in Jan-early Feb (must coincide with the previously mentioned PMS 😳), then made up after the holiday.

hygebhort- I have also no idea about the WW and have been avoiding trying to figure it out for the past yer. I don't need another reason to keep checking this thing! 🙄

Same here. Last year my boyfriend and I had only been dating a few weeks when Valentine's Day came around, so we didn't do anything to celebrate. Now that we've been together a year (or something like that . . . we don't have an actual "anniversary", sadly), it feels like we really should do something for it.

I'm feeling a little sappy myself this year. I feel like such a cliche, b/c I've always been single on Valentine's Day and thus have judged it from afar as a silly, fake, materialistic, heteronormative holiday....and now I have a SO and I'm kinda charmed by the whole thing. 😳 We are *supposed* to do just cards and chocolate, but he's 'arranged' something for me that technically isn't a gift, and I'm not sure how to reciprocate. My current living situation doesn't allow for pets, so I think it's the opportunity to play with an animal of some kind....:xf:
 
My fiancé got me a VS credit card that he pays for :naughty:
But we don't do much for valentine's day and definitely won't be seeing each other anytime soon 🙁

Every year that I've had an SO over V-day I try to make it perfectly clear that I have zero interest in flowers that will soon die and I'll have to dispose of but instead to substitute that "flower $" into "chocolate $." And yet I keep getting flowers... sometimes in addition to chocolate, but I'd rather have double chocolate!

Also, day after V-day = super huge discounts on V-day chocolate.

I just wish current SO was more into chocolate...
 
Valentine's day is one of my favorite holidays even if it is all fake and everything. I just love all the hearts and red and pink and everything is so cute. This year we might go out to dinner and get one another cards. Not much, but something.

I once told him that wearing that stuff is for his benefit, not mine and to never get it as a gift for me. Apparently I wasn't buying things often enough for him so he got us each a card on the same account :laugh: I have a monthly allowance on it and I send him pictures as a thank you 😀 :naughty: He usually ends up upping the allowance each time 😉
 
Ah, now if only I was dating someone who actually had money. As it is, I pay for everything. 🙄

Still, definitely keeping that idea in my back pocket in case things ever change. Spending money on lacy frilly uncomfortable things that I'll only wear for five minutes at a time is silly. Might as well get the person who benefits from them to pay for them! :laugh:

This is kindof silly, but my dad has gotten me flowers for valentine's day ever since I can remember. He's even managed to get them to me when I'm up at school! Last year he got them delivered to my work. It's been such a fun tradition for both of us 🙂 and while I love chocolates, getting flowers from my daddy and displaying them at home is something I wouldn't trade 😍

... and yes, I'm a daddy's girl lol😳

I used to wake up every valentine's day with roses lying next to me from my dad 😀. He still always manages to get flowers to me every year. It's the only thing I really care about on V day. Well that and another reason to eat yummy food 😀
 
On the valentines day topic...

Everyone I work with is either married or engaged... And when our work schedule came out I realized that my boss gave me the day off... I would be super excited to be off but not this year ....My fiancé is deployed so there will be no celebrating , and I will likely be a sad, depressed person all day (especially bc this will be my first day off in 12 days so I will likely be lazy all day lol )...

Why give me this day off knowing that I have no one to celebrate with when our entire hospital has an SO that is actually available. I don't think she uses her brain sometimes.

Em- I get a sexy clothes allowance too lol ( must be an Army thing lol )

Mine was Navy, but did 13 months in Iraq when he volunteered with the Army. 🙄 So maybe!! 🙂
