Hello everybody,

This is my first thread... I am hopefully thinking to get into the batch of 2010
at orlando or St.Pete. I have credits for Math and Physics. So I was thinking to take Nursing while I am completing my prerequisites...If so I can take a work schedule that won't affect PharmD classes...and I have a family to take care of...besides,who knows what happens after 6 more years...
Is it weired, taking nursing first and then PharmD? So confused...😕

Thanks...

Are you saying that you want to be a nurse before becoming a pharmacist? If so, this is not unheard of! There are many people, from all walks of life, change careers and start over with an entirely new one!

My uncle Johnny comes to mind! He was a successful lawyer but worked too much so he decided to move on and become a truck driver (Go figure! 😕 )! heh

I'm at the St. Pete campus and there really isn't much time to work. The most hours people work per week is 10. It gets worse by year 2. By year 3, you are doing your externships and won't have any time to work.

If you really want to be a nurse, then go for it.

If you want to be a pharmacist and just looking for something to pay the bills while you are in school, then I'd go a different direction.

Thanks guys...
What do you think about the future of Pharmacy after 6-7 years??? I know, no one can predict anything, but curious to know your opinion. I am changing my career because of unemployment. -was a computer nerd 🙁
Can't take anymore chances🙁

Me, too. I was a computer programmer for 20 years. My husband still is, but his company is outsourcing a lot of work. Hopefully, I'll be done with school before he loses his job to someone in India.

I chose healthcare because it seemed stable. Pharmacy should still be fine in 6-7 years. I'm in an area of Florida that is having lots of growth in housing, but does not have many pharmacies or hospitals. I expect that to change shortly. I'd hate to commute into Tampa for work.😡

I can't recommend nursing as a major in preparation for a career in pharmacy. My mother is a nurse educator. She saids that nursing programs are very restrictive in requirements and doesn't leave time for getting the requirements for pharmacy. Therefore, it would take you longer to prepare for entrance into a pharmacy school. Why not try pharm tech as a potential job while working on pre-pharmacy requirements?

Is that true, that we can work as pharmacy intern from 3rd year of pharmD. If so what would be the average rate/hr? If not, how do you guys find enough money to meet fees and other expenses?

I can work as a pharmacy intern after my 1st year. I'm in Florida and I think interns make about $12.50 per hour, but I'm not really sure. I'll know more when I start interning this summer.

I imagine that pharmacy as a profession will be rosy for at least the next few years - but I'm not nearly as optimistic as some of my classmates who extrapolate wild income figures from the "shortage" and the coming demographic bulge of retirees.

At some point, if salaries rise high enough, society (aka government and special interest groups) will decide that AI/offshore "counseling" and machine filling will have to make to do so as to keep costs down.

Keep in mind that a whole lot of pharmacy jobs don't require that much skill - don't take those if possible and consider tacking on an MBA or masters if you have time just in case (God forbid) the bottom falls out of the profession.
