hi, im a little confused about this post bacc business. ive been reading and it seems that there are about 7-10 well known post baccs, and im wondering if there are limited post bacc. opportunities throughout the country? or are these just the top ones people go to. i live in NYC and would rather st johns, or queens college to do some post bacc work to gett my gpa up a bit and prep for med school. can i take classes in this fashion or am i going to have to apply to say drexel? im not looking to get a masters, so i do not want to enter into that program, i just want to take some courses that i didnt take in undergrad (developmental bio for example) and raise my gpa.
any advice or info is greatly appreciated
thanks!

I suggest checking out the sticky "post-bacc FAQ" thread at the top of this forum. I think that'll answer most of your q's 🙂

i did but it seemed a little vague about the non formal programs. im still not sure if any school will participate in them, ill just call my school tomorrow and hope they know what im talking about....

yeah, I think that's the best thing to do cuz I'm not sure about that either. It seems that if you do it on your own you can just go to any school and register to take a few advanced science courses of your choice, then send that transcript to the med schools your applying to.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck figuring it out :luck:

yea thats exactly what im thinking as well, thanks anyways for the replies!

I'm doing a do-it-yourself post-bacc at UW-Milwaukee. I work there, so it's easier to get to classes. I'm taking all the prereqs as a "special student", but I still have access to the pre-med advisor and the letters service (it's not a committee letter, just a forwarding service). It's working out great for me and I recommend it for people for whom a conventional post-bacc is overkill, or too expensive, or too inconvenient (i.e., too far away).

This is exactly the same way I did my post-bacc classes, and it worked out great for me. I was also enrolled as a "special student", but didn't have trouble getting into classes because I was at the same university where I had gotten my bachelor's degree many moons ago (which still gave me seniority in terms of credits).

Here is a link from AAMC on post bacc programs:

http://services.aamc.org/postbac/

When I was researching coming to a post bac, I looked pretty much nation-wide because I was moving back from overseas and could go pretty much anywhere. I think there are about 75 schools listed above. They range from Full on formal post bac (like maybe Columbia), to a semi do-it your own with lots of access to pre-health staff (Loyola) to just a do-it-your own where they call it a post bac program.

Of course you can do it your own wherever. But, if you are looking for formal programs, hope this helps
