Do schools prefer first time applicants over reapplicants? I applied last year and received 3 interviews. This year I applied with a higher GPA, more EC hours, a better PS, better LOR's, and a bachelors degree. I also applied earlier in the cycle this time around yet 2 of the 3 schools that interviewed me last year don't seem to want to interview me this cycle. Not too bitter about it since some other schools have shown me love this cycle. Just curious what y'all's thoughts are. The schools are USC and UT Houston by the way.

I wouldn't think they would prefer reapplicants over first time applicants unless their stats have improved. To me, a reapplicant with the same stats as they had the first time they applied would have even less of a chance to get in than they did the first time. On the other hand someone reapplying with better stats would probably have an even better chance of getting in than a first time applicant because they show some dedication for getting into dental school. In my mind:

reapplicant + better stats > first time applicant > reapplicant + same stats

I mean this as no disrespect - but could it just be that they just didn't like what they saw/heard the first time around and have made up their minds, indefinitely?

That's exactly what I was thinking right after I made the post lol kind of sucks. I definitely feel like a way better applicant this time around.

You know what? I feel exactly the same way! I thought it was just me, but it seems like it's happening to others as well. I was competitive the first time I applied and interviewed at my state schools as well. This time, despite having a far more competitive application, they mostly seem to be ignoring. It's definitely frustrating! However, I've already decided to look elsewhere.

Definitely understand your frustration! Maybe they're just saving us for a reapplicant batch of interviews lol

hopefully... but I thought reapplicants and first-timers interview together.
