Hi everyone, I am a senior in high school and I want to pursue the career of a Pharmacist, but I am a bit confused on how to start! I know I cannot just apply to a school for the PharmD program, or can I? Is pre-pharmacy required? Or is there other ways of reaching the PharmD requirements?

Oh and 1 more question, this probably sounds stupid, but is Pre-professional courses the same as prerequisite courses? Thanks guys, hope someone can help me out

hey don't worry I was in the same position you were as a senior in high school just a couple of months ago. Well, some schools offer programs to hs seniors that guaranteed a spot in pharm school. Depending on the pharm school, some have 6, 7, and 8 year programs. Like USC and UOP have programs such as these. USC has a Tap program that's 7 years and UOP has a 6, 7 , and 8 year program. These schools are in california but if you are from somewhere else then check with the pharm school of your choice. These programs are very competitive but worth the try because you don't have to worry about applying to pharm school after getting a degree. And as for pre-reqs, most pharm schools now and days prefer an individual to recieve a degree first then apply to be a more competitive applicant.
So if I were you look into these programs at the pharm schools you want...btw there should be a couple of threads about these accelerated programs.

If you have a more questions (because i know what you're going through 🙂 ) just pm me.

Check out St. Lous College of Pharmacy... they offer a program for students directly out of high school.

And yes, as far as I know, those to terms mean the same thing.

Good luck!

I am actually from Boston, and I think Northeastern and the Mass College of Pharmacy also offer something like that, or atleast I hope. But I am nervous because I know that these schools are very competitive. One thing that I believe will affect me is my English SAT scores. In math I have a 570 which is pretty good, i think, but my english is only a 360! Yes, that I know that is low, I am retaking the test tomorrow morning though and I know I will be recieving a better score. My GPA is a 3.2(Well, since the last time I was informed) What do you think my chances are of getting into one of these schools, if my english SAT score increases?

There's more useful info in the FAQ. 👍

I'm not familiar with either of those schools. Have you checked their websites directly? Most schools have their requirements posted, some even post the stats that they consider competitive.

If the website doesn't help, you might try calling the school or even better, paying them a visit. I'm sure they could answer all your questions and at the same time you'd be making a contact for the future.

It can't hurt you to apply. It will be good experience even if you do not get in, but the SAT score could hurt you a bit. The other aspect to consider is pharmacy experience. How much experience do you have? If you don't have any, I would really look into working, or doing some volunteer work before committing to the program. It would really suck to get accepted and halfway through the program and find out you hated it.

Hi!
eastie53,

Are you thinking of OUT-OF-STATE schools, too?
I think University of Michigan - Ann Arbor has 6-year PharmD program. They accept about 20 students/year right out of High School.
