So here is my situation;

I graduated undergrad with a Bio major. I took the DAT once did poorly. Took it again and improved to an avg score of 18, but math was a 14 so need to retake b/c of that and 18 is just avg. Unfortunately, under the advisement and pressure of my family I applied with the scores and was obviously rejected, plus my application was late in the cycle.

So instead I began my masters in public health which I should be finishing next year. I am studying for my re- take and have applied for the current application cycle, nice and early. I am terrified that I will eff up my DAT and not get again. Lets face it this is my last chance pretty much. I spoke with an admissions counselor at NYU and they said in short I need to raise my chem and orgo to a 20 to match my bio.

In the event I don't, I have begun considering international dental schools. And am looking for advice, thoughts, and any information anyone may have. I know it's not that same as those who go to the Caribbean for med school. Thanks for your time!

how much did you study for the DAT and what test prep did you use? i feel like anyone can get at least a 19 on every section given enough time. i suggest you go to the library every day for at least 5 hours and practice with flash cards, practice tests, etc. the DAT isn't some mythical beast, you practice for it you can do well in it, same with anything else. if you stick to it and stay focused ill bet you can get any score you want.

When are you re-taking your DAT? If you have already applied, some schools will take in your old DAT score unless you notify them. At least UCSF won't even hold your application and will just process it (IF you meet the minimum requirement).

Just letting you know that it takes approximately 1 month from your testing day for the schools to receive scores. So I wouldn't necessarily say that you're an early applicant.. your application will be on hold and will not be reviewed and this means that you didn't really apply early. EARLY APPLICANT really refers to whoever turns in a COMPLETE app b/c adcoms will review the forwarded complete application.

I think healthcaree is making some generalizations here, not every school is the same. I would call around and let every school that you're applying to know that you are retaking your DAT. Multiple schools that I applied to allowed me to FAX or e-mail the unofficial copy of the score report.

In the meantime, study your a** off and kill the DAT. It's definitely doable, I jumped 4 points on my AA and a lot more on my TS on my last retake. Like Skogar said, put in the time and you will get what you want out of it.

As far as international schools... I'm not even sure why this would be an option.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
