Hello,

I was wondering how a ticket I received when I was 18 for drinking under age will affect my chances of getting into pharmacy school. I am now 21, and this is the only trouble I have ever had. Also, how should I disclose this on my application? I currently have a 3.6 overall GPA and a 3.79 sciences and math GPA. Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Chase

Can't say for sure how this will affect you but you do need to disclose it because all schools, if not most, will run a background check. What have you learned from the event? What steps have you taken to overcome and eventually better yourself since the event? Questions like those you would need to consider in order to show growth since then. Your job is to ultimately prove to AdCom that you are no longer the same person and you are on your way to becoming a better applicant and overall individual.

As long as you disclose it right away, it shouldn't hurt your chances. However, if you do, and it comes out later in your school year -- and I guarantee it will, -- you will be leaving without even have time to sigh. You have two options: to disclose and apply, or not to apply. A person from adcom told me admitting someone with such minor violation isn't a big deal. Even people with misdemeanors have gotten in. Felony is another story but we don't have to think about that.

Yea I was never considering not disclosing it, I am just curious as to how I should explain the situation. Should i go into detail or just keep it short? I have changed a lot since then, and I am currently very involved on campus and have spent every spring break since then doing volunteer work. Once again thanks for the advice, this has been a part of my past that has come back to haunt me, so to say.

Be honest, but don't go out of your way to explain what happened if you're not prompted. Everyone does stupid stuff when they're young. If schools can't see past this than you haven't done enough to move past it. You'll be fine.

The elderly typically die of the consumption, not a young buck like yourself. You'll be fine.

Out of sheer curiosity...

What if hypothetically his record was cleared? Say he went through some sort of probation and his criminal record was cleared. Would he still need to disclose this information?

Government agencies (licensing board of pharmacies) can see everything that was expunged. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I know people who got into school and got their intern licenses with DUIs. It might take you a bit longer to receive it, but you will get it (usually you write a letter to the board of pharmacy explaining your situation).

Don't lie, it can bite you in the ass somewhere down the line

The Texas state board of pharmacy technician registration instructs you specifically to list any offenses, including those that have been deferred/dismissed/expunged/whatever. By this evidence I would assume that all states have the ability to see your entire record.

I got a consumption by a minor back in college and did the community service and everything else needed to "remove" it from my record. I'm going to list it on my app and honestly I feel like I paid my debt to society. What kind of uppity school won't let a mistake I made when I was 19 slide?

Can't you get your records sealed once you turned 18? I know its possible in California as long as you don't pull some really stupid _😡_.

what's the point of expunging something if someone can see it? from my understanding, only law enforcement & judges can see items that were explunged, to disclose to any outside agency would subject them to liability issues.

Figure that out (and the laws within the state you were convicted) first THEN let that guide whether you disclose or not.

And the OP said "ticket" which makes it sound like a simple infraction rather than a full blown misdemeanor/felony conviction. Again, state laws will dictate what the OP should do.

At least in California ...

Your records will not be sealed unless you file a petition with the California court. After this petition is filed, the court holds a hearing to determine if your juvenile record can be sealed. Once these records are sealed, they will be destroyed after five years.

CAN YOUR JUVENILE RECORD BE UNSEALED?
For the most part, once the process of sealing a California juvenile record has been completed, it cannot be unsealed. However, there are certain cases where your records may be accessed. These include:

Insurance companies are permitted by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to look at these records and assess your insurance rates based on any existing motor vehicle violations.
If you commit a crime that qualifies under California's "Three Strikes" law, your records can be unsealed and the information contained therein may be used to increase your sentence.
If you file a suit against someone for "defamation of character", your records may be accessed.

The problem is I was already 18 when I recieved the ticket, and they said it would be expunged after 5 years if I do not have any other tickets. I haven't received any new tickets, but I am applying to pharmacy school this year, and I still have 2 years until it is expunged.

I am just going to explain my situation and how my life style has changed greatly since then, and then I will just hope for the best.

Thanks for the help.

looks like you're gonna have to report it...luckily it will fall off and you won't have to report it once you graduate/seek employment. is it an automatic expungement or will you have to file a petition?

not like you were diverting amphetamines, a little underage drinking isn't too bad. sucks you got caught.
