hey guys!

I had a quick question: Do you guys think it's a good idea to contact schools with questions, in order to get to know admissions counselors and they can be familiar with your name so when applications come in, your application is recognized amongst the piles of applicants? Has anyone tried this and believed it has helped in their admission to MPH schools? Especially for circumstances in which people have a lower gpa?

Thank you!!!

I can't imagine a situation where contacting the school would hurt, but a better advocate would be a professor. Find someone whose research interests you, shoot them an email, and see what happens. I did this and had a very good experience at 3 schools, and no responses from 2. I wouldn't think that it would greatly affect your application though.

I also had good experiences contacting professors at schools- but make sure that you do this selectively, contacting only professors who have research interests etc in common with you. In all cases the professors did write me back and in two cases they commented that they were on admissions committees and would look for my application. I think it's always good to contact admissions staff in order to be put in touch with current students as well (not that this helps with the GPA issue, but very helpful in researching schools and deciding where to apply).
