For all those who are already practicing, I have questions about CE courses during time in the military; Army specifically.

1) Do they reimburse for any CE?

2) If so, what are the limitations?

3) If I was stationed in Georgia and wanted to go to a CE course in California would that be covered?

4) Or do they give you a list of approved CE courses that you have to choose from?

5) Has anything changed since the recession started in 2008?

Any experience or knowledge to share will be greatly appreciated.

You will be sent to 1 CE course a year. The course you will be allowed to attend depends on what your specialty is. If you are a general dentist you will be given the option of attending 1 of a dozen or so military week-long CE courses

If you are a specialist you talk to your Commander about what you want to go to and see if it gets approved. Typically the ADA or your specific specialty meeting are the easiest ones to get approval for.

Nope - you will always be allowed to do 1 Army funded CE a year.

If you choose to attend a CE course not paid for by the Army, they will typically let you attend at your own cost, but not charge you leave.

How does the PGY-1 AEGD factor into your CE credits over the course of your career?

The services typically award the amount the AGD awards. Which is 150 hrs.

The Academy of Genral Dentistry awards them as follows:

Postgraduate Education
Effective January 1, 2009. Beginning with individuals completing a one-year CODA-accredited advanced dental education program (AEGD/GDR/GPR) in 2009, 150 hours of participation credit may be earned. Individuals completing a two-year CODA-accredited advanced dental education program (AEGD/GDR/GPR) in 2009, 300 hours of participation credit may be earned. Credit can be received for non-concurrent completion of both program types for a maximum of 450 hours of participation credit. Credits are apportioned among the subject categories according to a
predetermined ratio of subject hours based upon a survey of one- and two-year AEGD/GDR/GPR programs. A copy of the certificate is required to receive credit. Credit is permitted for the completion of programs as follows:
Current member of AGD 100% of credits are awarded
Join AGD within one (1) year of completion of the program 100% “
Join AGD within two (2) years 75% “
Join AGD within three (3) years 50% “
Join AGD within four (4) years 25% “
Join AGD after four years 0% “
