I am hoping/planning to transfer out of my program, either during my pgy1 year or pgy2 year which begins in july, if I cant I will stay in my program. The only thing is I signed the contract for the pgy2 year, does this matter, when I am trying to transfer? thanks

Sort of.

Your contract should have some sort of cancellation clause in it -- how much notice you need to give your employer if you choose to terminate. If you find a new spot, you could then give the appropriate notice to your current employer. Often it's 2-3 months, so that can sometimes be a problem if your new program wants you to start right away.

What happens if you simply quit? Probably, not much BUT your program could come after you for the added costs your exit creates. I have never heard of this happening, and it's unclear if it would be successful.

BUT...as Law2Doc will no doubt soon point out...they WILL have a case against you for breach of contract. The likelihood that they would do anything about it however is microscopic.

Don't quit your residency unless/until you have another signed contract for a new one. That is my advice.

When do you notify your PD that you plan to leave, after you get a signed contract or while you interview? Are there any ACMGE requirements other than what may have been in your signed contract?
