Is anybody else thinking about doing this? I was just offered $35,000 a year if I agree to come back and practice in my home state. For each year I take the money I must practice one year in that state. I always figured I'd come back here, but it seems like such a big commitment. Any ideas?

Its only four years. I'd imagine practicing in Alabama may have its perks. I'm sure there are some underserved areas where besides making a huge difference you can make bank, too!

since you figured you'd go back anway, 1 year for every 35,000 is not a big commitment. you have no qualms about practicing in alabama anyway. are there any other stipulations like residency restrictions or location of practice?

oh yea, I will have to practice primary care in rural/underserved area. I will also finish my years 3 and 4 in my home state as well as residency. There are many great facilities to choose from. That actually makes me feel better than most of the clinical sites associated with many of the other schools. At least I know where I'll be going from day one. I want to be an ob/gyn so that would be just fine too. Also, anywhere here is pretty much considered underserved. Even the bigger cities so there isn't too much limit in that aspect.

Hmmm, I figured there was a catch and that is primary care. However, there are so many things you can do in primary care that its not limiting you immensely. Its mighty incentful, but I don't know. Hmm.

how were you informed about this? I wouldn't mind a 35K a year off my med school to stay instate. 😀

different states have different programs. You can try to google specifics for your state. I found out through a representative that came to my school last year. Also, there are loan forgiveness oppurtunities after you graduate if you will practice a certain field in a certain place.
