So I was a frequent reader/poster in my past life before beginning residency but since 2008 have been pretty much non-existent. I do remember there was some great insight to be had about our field from several of the posters though.

I am trying to help revamp my programs grand rounds schedule for resident presentations and was hoping to ask for some input from the board. My idea is to do presentations on the controversies in our field (hopefully we have some other than myringotomy alone vs myringotomy + adenoids) and create a good discussion in our conference which has recently seen its attendants dip down into single digits some days (excluding residents).

Some issues that came to mind were:

1) Management of neck disease with unknown primary
2) Pediatric Sinus Surgery - to do or not to do
3) How young is too young for CI, or How old is too old in a non verbal person?

If anyone with real life experience can help me think of others I would greatly appreciate it.

Or, if anyone has experience with other GR formats that will increase interest for residents and attendings I would appreciate any advice. I am at one of the largest programs in the country staff wise, but it does not seem like anyone cares anymore.

Thanks,
-CT

PS - Any medical students out there with questions on applying to residency in Otolaryngology feel free to send me a PM. I am happy to help as much as I can.

Myles Pensak actually wrote a book in 2001 called "Controversies in Otolaryngology." Check out the table of contents on Amazon for some ideas. The information in the book is a bit dated.

1. Laryngectomy vs. chemo/XRT for T3-4 laryngeal CA
2. Role of endolymphatic shunt for Menieres
3. When to operate vs gamma knife vs observation for acoustic neuroma

One still relevant from that book is the chronic post-tube otorrhea.

Others:
1 - balloon sinuplasty
2 - percutaneous tracheostomy
3 - topical medicated irrigation/nebulizers for CRS
4 - multifocal microcarcinoma of the thyroid
5 - OSA surgery, specifically techniques to address the base of tongue
6 - Should H&N cancer be treated by community ENT's who do not have an established tumor board
7 - The use of steroids in the treatment of ENT conditions
8 - physician DTC advertising
9 - Battlefield 3 vs MW3

Well, the last controversy crosses disciplines
