Converting Newman to Fischer projection

Hi, I have a question regarding Newman to Fischer projection conversion.
Can we rotate the rear carbon so that we had eclipsed conformation instead of staggered one, and it was easier to convert this structure to Fischer projection?

For example,

What are correctly assigned stereocenters for the following structure?

Fischer projections are taken from the eclipsed orientation, so your lower method is incorrect. You can verify this by determining the configuration for carbons 2 and 3 on the original Newmann projection.
