this summer i'll be volunteering at the Body World's 3 exhibit in Los Angeles. ill be working either as a "medical information specialist" answering questinos about the displays and other health questions or as an "education presenter" giving mini presentations and doing activities with customers.

this sounds sweet! and is different from the typical volunteer experience.

any body ever been to a body worlds exhibit? I went to Body Worlds II when it was in LA a few years ago and it was awesome!!

There is also an exhibit called Bodies in San Diego (where i live) but I have not beeen able to make it out yet. Any one know the difference between Body Worlds and Bodies?

Sweeet! I took my 18 year-old son to see the Body Worlds exhibit in Dallas last year. It was fantastic!

I noticed the exhibit was coming to town on the tube - is it a single exhibit that they relocate or are there multiple?

Come to Mobile, Alabama and stop by the Exploreum! I'm currently the head manager for the Our Body: The Universe Within exhibit. Who else gets to teach anatomy to youth with real human specimens? I’d call them cadavers but they lose that title once they go through the polymer impregnation process. However, let me say its an incredibly cool job. Taking a year off and getting to work with this exhibit has been a breath of fresh air for me.

The Bodies exhibit in San Diego was really cool. I enjoyed seeing the separate systems, and then how they all came together at the end. And I've never smoked, but viewing the exhibit for the respiratory system sure seemed like a good way to go cold turkey.

Im not sure what the difference is between the two are (Bodies and Body Worlds), they seem very similar. I bet either would be an awesome place to have an anatomy final. If you haven't been able to see one of these exhibits yet - GO!

I volunteered at the Body World's Exhibit 2 years ago when it was at the Minnesota Science Museum and it was amazing. I hung out in the fetal room and reproductive section since that is my area of "expertise."

There are actually huge differences between the different exhibits out there. Body Worlds, by Gunther von Hagens is the original exhibit. He developed the plastination process that was then legally used by other people when the patient ran out.

I'm not looking to start a war here with the next statement, and I will admit at the front that I know very little about the other exhibits, but this is what I was told when I was volunteering by people in the know:

Some of the other exhibits [they would not tell us which one(s)] haven't been 100% open with their policies on how they obtain bodies. When Herr von Hagens started this process, he was very careful and made sure that the donor was living and in a good mental state when going over what would happen with their body. This wasn't something that their loved ones would decide nor did they ever use bodies that they didn't have a signature for. The exhibit if posts a copy of contract in the exhibit.

That is the extent of the details given to us. Some people may not consider that a big deal, but there are huge ethical implications here it was a HUGE deal to the Science Museum of Minnesota and was the reason that they allowed Body Worlds to come and none of the other exhibits.

But, if you haven't had an opportunity to see the exhibit, definitely go! Rysser21, you are going to LOVE your volunteer experience!!!!

The Body World exhibit is "divided" up into 3 portions. I'm using that loosely b/c it may never be the same group in two spots. When I was a volunteer, the workers told me that at any time the Body Worlds people could give a week's notice and swap around pieces. They do it this way so that as many people as possible can see as many of the pieces as possible.

I saw Body Worlds 2 when it was in Boston and it was AMAZING. My girlfriend is a PT and we spent nearly 3 hours walking around and checking out all of the displays and exhibits. The coolest part was that it was free because it was college night at the Museum of Science. On a side note, the dude that created the exhibit and plastination is mad creepy. I don't know if any of you have seen this guy, but he looks like he belongs in a horror movie.

There was a show about this on 20/20 that was very interesting. You might be able to find something about it on their website. Some of the means by which the bodies are obtained definitely seem fishy.

Yeah, I didn't want to get into the details that I had heard but 100% for sure, all tissues in Body Worlds have consent to be there or came from an old German anatomy museum, so they have been public property or on display in formaldehyde for 100 years already.
