i was just wondering what you guys think would be the best city/environment to spend four years for med school in? i'm sure miami, san diego, hawaii, and san fran would be awesome soley based on the weather and beaches that are right there. i'll be going to chicago myself which i'm hoping will be a blast but just based on the city, i think going to new york city would be the greatest enviornment. there would be just so many options of things to do or places to go.

Hi there,
Better to be an a place where there is a good study environment with easy air travel out when you get a vacation. My vote goes to Charlottesville, Va. It is within a 2 hours drive of Washington, DC or Richmond Va and has great housing with an wonderful academic environment. There is little crime and loads of things to do if you have a little free time.

When you get to DC, you can easily take the shuttle to NYC and Chicago is a quick plane ride away. If you are in a city where there is loads going on, it's hard to study and you really don't have that much free time in medical school.

I'll take hanging with my "peeps" in C'ville, shooting some hoops, catching a microbrew at the Starlight or just passing the time away studying on the lawns of Mr. Jefferson's University.

njbmd 🙂

Anywhere that is sunny in the south.

If there is more than one day of snow a year, it's automatically ruled out.

Philly

Actually, it's NYC, but you can't really afford too much of the cool stuff there as a med student. Philly, however, is a lot cheaper, while still offering a good amount of cultural attractions and nightlife. Plus it's a 2-hour, 20dollar round trip away from New York.

It's gotta be Miami. There's everything you could want. Beaches, sun, nightlife, celebrities, bunches of different cultures... and South Beach! 😎

Any urban centre would be cool; you'd have the opportunity to see interesting cases, along with a pretty good nightlife.

NYC or LA hands down in terms of stuff to do / cultural opportunities / awesomeness. Both cities also have great schools too.

My vote went with so cal though. Maybe I'll try to do my residency in NYC....

If I were single I'd pick Chicago, but that's only because I've lived there and I love it. I've visitied many other cool cities too but don't know them as well.

If you're married, and especially if you have kids, the best place to be is the one that offers the most support for your spouse. Hence, Salt Lake City for me! Nice combination of family support, good schools, urban convenience, and proximity to outdoor activities in a relatively safe neighborhood.

I'm not sure how you people pick wind, rain, snow, and ice.

My top choices for residency are Phoenix, Dallas, Tampa, Oklahoma City, and Miami.

Don't laugh, man. When I first started to go pre-med hardcore, I didn't know the education in the Caribbean tended to be "second rate" (insert beginning of flame war here), for lack of a better term. I saw a poster with some Ross cards on it and thought that it would be a great place to go to school-- can't beat the weather, right? It wasn't till I found out later from a physician friend that you don't go there unless you really have to.

The laugh was a sarcastic one, b/c like you said you don't go there unless you have to. That's why I was suggesting to the OP that the location of the school shouldn't be his primary concern.

if you are in NYC, hope it is in one of those trump towers, i live in washington heights by columbia, and can't have food in my apt. cos of the mice, cockroaches and oh, the electricity goes off when i use the microwave... obviously there are better apts out there but i am guessing this wouldn't happen in say ... seattle?

I do say Philly because it is a wonderful city (can't say enough about this) situated around many other major cities. You basically get the best of all worlds.

It's all about the original Chocolate City, DC baby!!

Miami was bumping back in the Luke Skywalker days but these days, I dunno (I was there last fall and wasn't impressed). As a matter of fact, Florida is just too dam hot to make my list and I went to high school/college there!

Nobody likes Seattle? Come on now!

That is just so not even true. And I went to TX last year and got a nice dose of Texan rain and Seattle has *nothing* on that. I'm still traumatized.

How about London? I liked the area around Imperial College London. South Ken is gorgeous and full of history. And imagine doing clinicals at Charing Cross!

http://www1.imperial.ac.uk/medicine/

Imperial accepts more than 300 undergraduate medical students per year.

Much of the learning is set in a clinical context and related to work in the Faculty's six teaching hospitals.

Most teaching and research is carried out in major teaching hospitals at the following campuses.

Chelsea and Westminster
Charing Cross
Hammersmith
North West London Hospitals
Royal Brompton
St Mary's

i did a six week rotation in london last summer and had to sell a kidney in order to afford to live there. even nyc is a bargain compared to that place.

NYC gets my vote. It is so fun, of course, but also, if you know where to go, you can live cheaply, (okay, okay, aside from housing.) Then, you will get to see some cases that you probably would not if you were going to school in (no offense) small towns. The trauma experience in surgery is great, you will get to see gun shot wounds probably every time you're on call. You get to see some infectious disease stuff that no longer really even exists in the US (from immigrants). Aside from that, opportunities to serve the underserved is incredible.

Where in london did you do your rotation? What was the most expensive thing besides housing?

San Diego... and at a distant second, NYC. 😀

None of your weak ass cities has anything on NOLA!

C-ville is AWESOME with tremendous music scene and just so beautiful.

But more selection in Philly. Its centrally located, not as expensive as NYC/Boston and they are only a few hours away, as is DC and down south. 😍

Where do yall find all this time to parlay in your respective cities?

If I had to pick one though: Atown.

Anywhere north of the Mason Dixon line. I've been hot and covered in mosquito bites my whole life. Can't wait to move somewhere where my seat belt doesn't burn my hand on a routine basis.

So . . . San Francisco 🙂 Never too hot or too cold, beautiful, exciting, and liberal. My dream town.

Medical Univ of SC in charleston, SC-you get the beach, sun, no snow, history and culture!
just my pick
streetdoc

Charleston, SC for sure! You get culture (east side, lower peninsula):

beaches (folly beach):
