I tried to find research articles on this without any luck in PubMed and I want reputable sources. Does anyone know much about expecting mom's banking their cord blood for potential needs of the baby? A friend asked me about this, and I had never heard of it before.

I am especially interested in research articles, but would welcome informed opinions too.

Thanks.

http://www.marrow.org/NMDP/cord_blood_bank_list.html is a good source of general information...not research though
in the hospital where i did a rotation, many of the mothers were recruited to donate the baby's blood to the public bank..but some of the moms did collect the blood to be stored in a private facility only for their use in the future if ever needed.

The leading company is Viacord. The price tag is about 1500 bucks up front and $100/year for private storage. You have to weigh the cost and benefits. Even viacord states that statistically your baby will have a 1% chance of having a disease that needs to be treated with stem cells by the age of 50. However, God only knows what things we'll be able to do with the stem cells in the future. My wife and I are having our first baby in about 10 weeks and we have chosen to donate the cord but not bank it ourselves.
